Overpromising at the Office

Anyone else finding this to be rampant these days? I can't stand when someone promises they can deliver something by Friday and can't deliver until Tuesday. Multiple times I'll know it's a super tight window so I'll even ask if we need to push back our dates, but they always seem to say they can meet it.
What the hell happened to underpromise and overperform? These young kids got it all backwards, and it makes things much worse.

Probably has something to do with the type of people who were hired. Fake it till you make it types.

I'm not quite sure how I stand on this.
I'll have a solid answer for you by the end of the day.

Try giving them a little pat on the arse like athletes do. Report back to us with the results.

It depends on the customer.
People always want to please and avoid confrontation. Also, depending on the office environment, if your realistic expectation is unacceptable and someone else is willing to "over promise", regardless of the outcome, you will look bad.
It's basically the same principle as easier to ask forgiveness that permission. Once committed, you can't take it back.
