How was Al Pacino not the lead actor in The Godfather?

It's mindboggling how he only got a Best Supporting Actor nomination for that film. He had more screen time than Brando and played the most important character in the film. I also thought he gave a better performance. Michael was also a much more difficult character to play and Pacino had to completely transform himself as the character changed over the course of that film. Pacino said he was pissed off about not being submitted for Best Lead Actor and I don't blame him one bit. That was a screwjob of epic proportions.

I've argued this with a friend of mine for 25 years

Brando was obviously the bigger name and as my friend says he's the "title" character. It could be the producers submitted Pacino as best supporting to not have him up against Brando. But if you only had 1 in Best Actor, it should have been Al with Brando as Supporting.

I always thought Brando was the main character as the plot was centered solely on events that were occurring with him.

But I would really argue that they were both the main character. In a three hour epic, you're probably going to end up with multiple main characters.

I mean try to pinpoint the main character in LotR. Is it really Frodo? I mean, he is carrying the ring, but Gandalf and Aragorn are both extremely important as well with just about the same amount of screen time.

Can't really disagree. Although Brando killed it in his role.

Brando made Pacino an offer he couldn't refuse.

Vito was not only the main character in The Godfather - he was mentioned in almost every sentence, and certainly in every scene, even those in which he was not present.

Clearly Michael is the lead character in Godfather II and Godfather III (which I cannot recommend the third film to anyone, but the most die hard purist who insist on watching it for completeness, but it is really a pedestrian film compared to the masterpieces that were the first 2 films).

Because Brando is Brando. And pretty overrated.

I feel the same exact way about Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds.

I'm embarrassed to say that I've never seen any of the Godfather movies. Seen bits and pieces. When the wife and kid head back to school, me and the dog will make it a priority. I always tell myself I'm going to take the time to watch all 3 together, and I think that is what held me back.

I completely agree. The main story line was about his rise to power. Should have been a a best actor.

This I don't agree with, but Brando should have been supporting.
