In comparison to other countries in that area, Iran is decently developed. Their population is also not nearly as radical/extreme on average as their ruling parties.

Opening up trade lines allows further westernization/trade and undermining of the ruling parties vilification of the West.

This. Iranians are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Tourism is a big part of their local economy. It's a shame that we believe everything our media forces down our throats.

I seem to recall another country that you could say the same about. Germany in the 1930's.
