Dude, no lie, I fricking hate that airport. It's ridiculously busy and it's an uncontrolled field(sorta). And there is controlled airspace all around it but a lot of pilots don't realize it's controlled. You have a mix of newbie Cessna drivers, newbie fighter pilots, and experienced corporate pilots all in a really small area. Do your pilot a favor and help him keep an eye out for traffic. We used to have a Baron that we normally flew single pilot but when we went to Destin we took an extra pilot just for the extra set of eyeball. Especially this time of year.

Does the fact that Eglin AFB and ValP airport share runways facto into that at all?

I agree. Destin's airport is a lot busier than I thought it would be. I stayed at a condo near there last month. Literally one small jet after another was taking off or landing. I had no idea that many private jets would be flying into destin. $$$$$$$
