With all the talk about Lsu's prestige and that they could've went with a bigger name i have to disagree. Bigger names want their own guys. Steele can recruit, we keep Ed o and Raymond, he's worked under some big time defensive minds, Saban hired him twice for a reason. Clemson stint wasn't so bad until final year and they got much better with most of his recruits. Now we have Best recruiting staff in college football. Talent is 99% of it.. Have s feeling he's gonna look really good the next 3 years. Thanks Kevin Sumlin!

Then why has LSU declined each year since "21-0" to the current 8-5 and "Unranked" status?

Talent has been there except at one position last season.

The "Talent" at Alabama is no better than at LSU, yet they win the SEC and/or NC with consistent regularity.

Keep everything the exact same at both programs, but just switch Head Coaches and LSU would immediately win the SEC.

I can guarantee with 100% certainty that Saban isn't going to be running a "Pro-Set I-Form Offense" that's designed for "Drop Back under Center" QB's with "Spread Shotgun" QB's.

No way the man would force the square peg into the round hole. He's smarter than that.

Talent is important, but it's NOT 99% important. It has to be complimented by some degree of competent game mangement and organization from the head coach.

Enough is enough. Time to finish first in the SEC West minimum.

It could happen if BH "Pulls a Jameis" in his second year and major injuries are avoided on defense and the OL...............

We won't know for sure until they step onto the field but I'm with you on this. With phenomenal recruiting and excellent position coaching I can't be more excited about the way things are shaping up. I see it like this. He's a proven college football coach and has a ridiculous amount of talent chomping at the bit to show out. I think the D will be special and elite for yrs to come.

Let's be honest. There's been a lot of Steele-historical-revisionism going on in the last few months.

Hell, on another thread there was the assertion that the media gave the hire "rave reviews."

What actually happened is Steele was the joke candidate. When Pendergast and other names were being thrown about, someone would post, "Yeah, Les is going to hire Kevin Steele" in the context of that being a big joke, something LSU would NEVER do. And of course the resultant meltdown when he was actually hired.

Rave reviews from the media? Hardly. Practically all the media were saying that out of all the SEC programs that changed DC's, LSU fared the worst and was at rock bottom.

Given this guy's horrible losing record at Baylor and his less than spectacular performance as a DC ... I'm hoping for the best. I'll be happy if he proves my apprehension groundless.

But let's not live in this fantasy world and act like this was some acclaimed hire from the get-go. It wasn't and it's not. This board has on purple and gold preseason glasses.

Okay, it's great to be optimistic in the summer. Every program in the SEC West is. But I've seen the posts predicting national championships before followed by the first few opposing drives of the season and then the meltdown: "This defense is hot garbage!"

So let's be realistic on how the Steele hire was assessed when it happened.

It did NOT get rave reviews.

I'm taking a wait and see approach. I do believe that a big part of coaching is the Jimmy's and the Joe's rather than the X's and the O's. Great players make coaches look good. Steele is set up to succeed. He has a great D line coach and a great secondary coach. So he will have extremely talented and well coached players. He won't need to be a genius. Just let his ball players do what they do.

Let's use Brick Haley as an example. When he had Mingo, Montgomery, Logan, and Brockers, he was a great D line coach. When he had Hunter, Rasco, Lacoture, and Godchaux, his lines weren't the same. Did he forget how to coach? Nope, he just had better players.

Chavis ran the same D since 2011 so why didn't somebody make plays like Tyrann Mathieu did? The answer is that Dwayne Thomas isn't Tyrann Mathieu. Same system but works completely different due to the player executing it.

The old saying Jimmy's and Joe's beat X's and O's has some merit. While LSU's defensive schemes of the past were pretty good, there was a noticeable scarcity of talent at key positions on defense since the 2012 season. Chavis was not a dynamic recruiter, whereas Steele has been throughout his career. LSU appears to be getting the Jimmy's and Joe's it wants with the hire of Steele and Orgeron. We will have to wait and see if Steele's X's and O's are as good as his ability to get Jimmy's and Joe's.

While LSU fans have been focusing on the recruiting side of the coin, Texas A&M fans are convinced Chavis will fix their defensive deficiencies with X's and O's. I'm skeptical about that. I'm not convinced A&M has enough Jimmy's and Joe's. How will Chavis instill physical toughness in the defensive players when they practice against offensive players who do not focus on a physical style of play? His schemes can get players into positions to make plays, but if they can't make the plays what good has it done them?

The impact of X's and O's might be more immediately apparent, but over time the Jimmy's and Joe's will make more difference.

I have to tread carefully with comments concerning Kevin Steel. I've already been banned once. I remember being livid with his hiring. It remains to be seen if he's up to the job, his track record doesn't inspire confidence. I guess we'll all find out soon enough.

The comment that talent is everything is bullshite. I can give you many examples of where teams were loaded with talent and they sucked on defense. You need not look further than when Malveto was here under our own defense. The correct statement would probably be it's somewhere in the middle. You need both coaching and talent. It's true talent can sometimes alleviate mediocre coaching and vice versa but I believe a premiere defense is in the middle.

All that being said, I think Steele is a competent enough coach if he's loaded top to bottom with blue chip talent which he's definitely getting now, we'll be okay. I was down big time on the hire but I'm more optimistic now because I realize with the recruiting staff we have it's possible his entire defense could end up 5 star talents. Hard to screw that up unless you're completely incompetent.

Talent is huge but it isn't 99% of it.

Pendergast was target #1. He has really sick family in Arizona(?). I think that played a role in his decision to turn down LSU. He wound up heading back to the NFL in SF; closer to home. Not saying LSU couldn't have landed him, but it's possible he didn't want to be taking care of his family while also working 365 days a year trying to deal with 18 year old kids. It's not like he turned us down for a lesser gig or even an equal gig.

Bob Shoop was was choice number 2 (or 1A). The rumor was that he was really interested, but LSU wasn't going to commit to him immediately. James Franklin essentially told him that if he went down to BR at all, he wasn't going to have an office in Happy Valley when he came back (this is also what the story allegedly was when Jack del Rio was interested in replacing Saban). He'll be great at Penn State, but I doubt he turnS down a solid $1million+ offer from LSU, had they made it.

Steele is a good hire, and might very well be great. People are kidding themselves if they think he was target number 1. But Les knew his job past 2016 depended a lot on this hire. He was going to be deliberate during the process (now, should he have had a list already in mind and been ready to open the check book immediately? I'd say so. It seems like the writing was on the wall about Chavis for a while. A back up plan should have at least crossed his mind).

Anyway, getting a linebackers coach specifically was key. Even though Chavis claimed that as his specialty, it always seemed to be a thin area on the squad--a good to great MLB generally, but uncertainty on the outside. Hopefully Steele can Bring the level of recruiting in that area up to par with the D-Line/Secondary. With the way the DLine had been going lately--talent with below average results, Coach O was key. LSU now essentially has the three best coordinators in CFB at their positions. Steele just needs to manage all of the parts. If he can field a top flight defense with the talent presently here, he'll be shown the door quickly.

Steele alone could have been a worry. With coach O on staff IMO it is an upgrade from the previous D staff.

I dissagree with talent being 99% of it. Im happy with the hire. I think our defense will look somewhere in between what bama and lsu have done in the past......could be a very good thing. But what he does as an actual def coach resultswise is a big question imo.

Anyone proposing that LSU wanted Chavis to leave and Steele was a grand slam hire needs get a grip on reality and stop making up shite.

Les was dumbfounded when Chavis left and Steele was not a top-tier candidate to replace him.

Does that mean it won't work out in LSU's favor? Of course not. The book just got opened.

But 4 pages of back and forth idiocy doesn't mean jack. The facts are simple. LSU hasn't played for the SEC Title since 2011. LSU last season finished 4-4 in the SEC and unranked nationally. Arky and AU crushed LSU in last year's matchups. MSU - yes, MSU - did the same, but decided to press the brake too soon but escaped. Alabama made the NC playoffs. Even Ole Miss played LSU to a 7-10 loss in Tiger Stadium.

The SECW isn't going away.

I'm hoping to see a much higher energy level from both the players and the coaches along with some variance of defensive schemes late in the fourth quarter which Chief never provided.
