8. Though a 9 wouldn't have hurt on the bigger fish. I use this for steelhead too so 9 would be too much for them imo

Typically 6 or 7 for steelhead? Is that right?

BTW, my dad's very best friend was a graduate of the Auburn vet school. Big supporter as well. They live in NE MS.

Cool, I hope to get to the point where I can be a big supporter

Yes and no on rod wt. where I fish it wouldn't be super rare to hook into a 15 lber. Given the incredible fight of steelies a 6 wt could get ugly. Most say 7-9 for steel and 8-10 for salmon where I fish. I couldn't afford more than 1 big rod so I went 8.

I have a bunch of rods. To the point that I can't see getting anymore.

I think I have around 18. From 2wt to 12 wt

I do (or did) build most of them. Mostly St Croix and Sage blanks.

Not cancun but I've hit bonefish on the north end of Cozumel island. Don't remember the guide but he was really good, sorry.

I am not sure about a guide but when I was in Riviera Maya a guy went out on the beach every day fly fishing and caught tons of permit. There were also some big barracuda in the water that you could only see with polarized sunglasses on. That would be a trip.

Down near Xcalak, 5 hours south, almost in Belize. Tarpon, permit, bone are common.

I did many years ago. Guide I used name was Umberto. He was awesome.

Caught a couple of snook and jumped 5 tarpon and landed one.

Amazing fishing trip.

Had to google that one, that is way down there. Belize is also on the list of options so I'd imagine that's where we would end up if we don't go to Cancun.

Long shot here, but does anyone have experience Fly Fishing in Central Texas (within 60 minutes of Austin)? I have lived here for 3 years and only recently have learned there are fly fishing spots in the Hill Country (Guadalupe River).

Check out Sin Duda Villas, stayed there twice, both 14 years ago and earlier this year. Place is incredible. They have an older website and an updated facebook page.

You've got a ton of good water near by. The colorado south of town, the san marcos, the guadalupe (stocker trout in winter), san gabriel up north. The only area that has Guadalupe bass. A kayak or other boat will be very helpful. I'm not the best for particular spots as I only get down there a couple times a year and am usually just trying to squeeze in whatever i can while down there for something else. The San Marcos near martindale is beautiful and not very crowded.
