I have serious doubts any of those "student athletes" would willingly give up their opportunity to impress NFL scouts over such a trivial issue.
But I guess I could be wrong.

that was the argument used in 2006 when this nonsense started. it quickly went away because no player is gonna throw away their future in the NFL because of a purple and gold flag.

No, it was around 2-3 years ago I think.
I remember the issue coming up almost 10 years ago and LSU issuing a statement saying they don't condone but will not ban the flag. I must have missed the last round.

The following is a statement from LSU Chancellor Sean O’Keefe.
This is to reiterate the LSU position on the purple-and-gold Confederate flag. The most recent contribution to this important debate is contained in the July 31, 2006, edition of 225 magazine, in which an LSU student was interviewed concerning the matter.
LSU does not and will not condone the display of the purple-and-gold Confederate flag. Some members of the university community consider this a symbol of hate, bias, intolerance and bigotry, while others view it as a symbol of Southern heritage. LSU, and the First Amendment, support the right of both groups to express their views. However, the university discourages the display of this symbol, and, indeed, the use of the university colors should not imply endorsement or affiliation.
Some would like the university to “ban” the flag, but such an action would also violate a fundamental, constitutional First Amendment right of free expression. This law allows people to wave a purple-and-gold Confederate flag, but also allows others to protest that flag. As such, the university will not adopt an unenforceable policy to inhibit these rights, but will endeavor to encourage greater awareness of the offense it brings to members of our community. The university has actively discouraged the sale of the flag by commercial establishments and is seeking options to prohibit the use of the university colors in this manner.
The university seeks to encourage an open debate among students and members of the university community to foster continued intellectual discussion. Rather than impose one opinion on everyone, the university is a venue to encourage students, faculty, staff and community members to discuss this issue openly and honestly. Public discourse is the road to education, enlightenment and tolerance. To encourage that debate, LSU will sponsor a symposium this September to examine this issue and other related topics. Broad participation will be encouraged and welcomed.
LSU also has a responsibility for public safety and order. Campus demonstrations, like all other campus events, must be registered with the university through the Office of Student Life & Academic Services. All student groups must submit the event registration application. Non-student groups also must complete a similar registration process. Any event, rally, demonstration or protest that is not registered will not be permitted on campus. This policy is in place for the safety of all LSU students, faculty and staff. All student, and non-student, groups will be expected to follow LSU policies and procedures to ensure the safety of all. Those organizing and registering such events are reminded of the “peaceful assembly” policy and the Student Code of Conduct. These polices raise the prospect of constructive dialogue and civility. Adherence to these policies will contribute to a more meaningful and progressive debate to illuminate all points of view.

Can anyone dig up who said what? The players didn't say they wouldn't play, but they expressed their opinion about it and it went pretty well. Bascially I remember it was like a big "come on, MANNNN! don't fly that shite in the stadium when we're on the field"
Posted on 6/26/15 at 2:23 pm to mikelbr
i don't think players said shite.
it was black students protesting that the black players shouldn't play. it was all a big to-do for nothing.
ETA: i remember seeing a black student holding a sign with pics of like J Rock, Bowe and Buster Davis. it said something like "these are people you're offending by using the flag, etc".

Upvote, Mr O'Keefe!
Such a simple concept that people have just dismissed b/c of one Beta with mental health issues and a gun.

When will I stop seeing Black Power tshirts and stickers because I'm offended? My white self is triggered after I see it and it makes me feel like I'm about to get my arse beat. You see, its suppose to work both ways but I guess black lives matter more than any other race.

Mine will be flying. It's funny. Down here in thib there has been a bit of an outpour of proud southerners surrounding these events. I noticed a few lsu rebel flags hanging from houses. And the occasional guy flying one behind his truck. Good shite.

I think most people want it removed from government buildings, which I think is the right thing to do.

The average white southerner should not associate any sense of pride with that flag.
The elite kept your ancestors poor and uneducated while they lived opulent lifestyles, then tricked and coerced your ancestors to fight for a cause that didn't benefit them before or after the war.
You can fly that flag, but you still look like a fool doing it.

If not for the uneducated part, I can't tell if this is a reference to pre-civil war or current times. Replace "uneducated" with "indebted", and you are describing today.

I'm also getting very tired of giving classes on Louisiana Military Heraldry...
Let's take this from the top...in 1838 (way before the Civil War...hello!!!!) the Washington Artillery of New Orleans was formed...which has a roaring Bengal Tiger head on a scarlet shield as the regimental crest...then there's service at places like Anzio and Iraq...
as far as the LSU connection, no less than Pete Finney and Dan Hardesty have both attributed the WA as part of the reason for the naming of the LSU Tigers...

I'm 36, and I remember. Katrina opened up that season. There was a 4-5 game stretch in the middle of that season where all the games were at home. And walking down Nicholson, from Burbank, towards Alex Box Stadium was like walking through an LSU orientated civil war reenactment. (see 4 posts above)
Lift kits, roll bars, LSU confederate flags, and Hank Williams Jr being played at every other tailgate along that walk. THe story died down, and the flags went away.
People want to be contrarian, and if this story is still kicking come football season, I expect to see the same thing again.
I remember this too.
A group of black students that relocated after Katrina threw bitch fits over the flag. They were all over the news.
They used the "racist white people fly the racist flag but come to watch black players play in the game" bullshite. Some of the football players agreed with them, but they didn't stop playing.
