Serious question - for all the people who think the Robert E. Lee statue is completely historical and has nothing to do with bitterness or sour grapes, then why was me made to he deliberately facing north in defiance? This was clearly a little jibe from the statue and circle planners to the North and in protestation towards the outcome of the war.

I am not against the statue and would oppose removing it, but I understand where Landrieu is coming from - New Orleans has clearly become a liberal, global city where tolerance is vital to the recurring tourism, etc. I don't think any European cities would keep this monument nor would the San Franciscos or New York Cities of America.

Facing North? Looks like he is facing southwest on his horse to me.

historical and or bitterness does not equal racism

There is a statue of one of Virginia's largest slave owners right at the foot of Wall Street.

I would seriously listen to an effort to remove the Lee statue. I'm not a close-minded dude.

Here's my problem though: Landrieu, like so many politicians, will speak loudly about the low-hanging fruit du jour. But the removal of the Lee memorial won't repair a single REAL issue in New Orleans. High violent crime rates come from high poverty rates, which come from poor schooling. Speaking of schools.....City Hall cares so much about schools that over half of the school zone lights in Orleans Parish are either inoperable or malfunctioning.

Tolerance means understanding and accepting others views does it not?

Or does it now mean "frick your position, you're racist"?
