Has Hulu always had the ads?

Yes.
It is annoying. Hulu's library makes up for the ads though.

You pretty much have a choice. Pay for programming , steal programming, or watch free programming with ads. That's life.

This is pretty much the difference between the free and paid Hulu.
I think it is worth it.

The free Hulu experience only has a limited number of episodes to watch, while a Hulu subscription offers unlimited access to our full library including current-season episodes from popular shows such as Scandal, Family Guy, Once Upon A Time, New Girl, Saturday Night Live, Modern Family and many more. You can also watch every episode from every season of shows like South Park, Empire, Sons of Anarchy, The Mindy Project, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Nashville, Law and Order: SVU and many more. We also offer a full range of Hulu Originals – unique series you can’t watch anywhere else.
I think it is worth it.

I like the idea of new current episodes, but I'm not digging the ad thing. Especially since their competitors offer ad free programming.

Like I said, the library makes up for it. For TV shows, it far surpasses the competition. I believe the ads are what allows for that.
In my situation, with anime, it has everything I ever need. Then you throw in the TV shows I like, and it really makes up for it.

Hulu doesn't have commercials on everything. For instance, the 90s x men cartoon is commercial free.

it has ads on some of the older stuff I watch. I know Community did
how has the xmen cartoon held up?

Better than I was expecting. Gambit is pretty cringeworthy though.

I saw they also have spider man, I grew up on those 2 cartoons.

internet ads are not going away. Just look at how much this site has changed in the last three years.
There is a lot of money in ads. Hell it trips me out.
Each click is so expensive to advertisers. There is just so much money in it.

I would pay for hulu if it could be used on multiple tv sets, like netflix or amazon.

Hulu is a cable TV service masquerading as an internet streaming service.
Given that Comcast owns Hulu, this shouldn't be that surprising.
