Perhaps a bit of hyperbole, but this critic thinks all three shows premiering on Sunday--True Detective, Ballers, and The Brink are not very good.

quote:

The lineup of shows that launches Sunday, June 21, on HBO is the most disappointing full lineup the network has ever assembled. It banks heavily on star power, but its three shows mostly fail to tell coherent stories. There are good reasons to watch all of them, but there are also good reasons to skip them.

You know what else was considered "Not Good" by critics when it came out... "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly."

Is Ballers basically the sports version of Entourage?

I'm excited for all three. I'll wait and form my own opinion on them.

Looking forward to True Detective and Ballers. Not sure if I'll catch The Brink but the cast looks solid. I'm not a fan of judging shows on just three episodes.

I'm actually most excited about The Brink. It's supposed to be inspired by Dr. Strangelove and Catch 22. So if it's actually in that vein it could be good.

I haven't seen any previews for The Brink I have no doubt they'll all be entertaining. I only get true detective 2 and ballers on HBO Go

I see one preview and I'm like "oh that looks really funny"

And then I see a different preview and I'm like "wow they tried way too hard, that's gonna suck"

Why? Because they have seen more movies than you and can articulate their opinions better?

I'm really hoping True Detective is going to be good. I just finished season 1 and really liked it a lot.

Vox always has hyperbolic articles like that. Tomorrow they'll have one that supports all three shows as the best night on TV. And Vanderwerff, coming over from the AV Club is a good critic, but usually overly hard on his reviews. The shows could all be watchable, but if they're not transcendent, he gives them a hard time.

In some ways perhaps True Detective is the most unfair criticism of the three since it has a basis for comparison. However, the fact that the director Fukunaga and the original actors aren't back can certainly be cause for skepticism. We'll see where it goes. I think it is fair to wonder how this method of a series with rotating actors/stories every season will work.

I love how critics tell me what I'm supposed to like and dislike

True Detective won't be as good because of the high bar it set in the 1st season. It's just not going to happen. I hope it's entertaning, nonetheless
