Can you or anyone else touch on this a little bit more? Are SP3s more prone to a virus than an iPad? If I were to get an SP3, does the basic Norton Anti-Virus work to keep it clean or is something more powerful than that necessary? Thanks for everyone's contributions, very much appreciated.

A Surface Pro (of any kind) *is* a full-blown Windows 8 PC. It is just as prone to viruses and other malware like any normal computer is.

Its almost impossible for an iPad to get a virus.

Yep. Windows Defender and Malwarebytes is pretty much all you need. Unless you do crazy downloading or go to stupid sites.

Consuming media means watching Netflix, YouTube, Stumble, etc. iPads are perfect for that.

I have an SP3 and iPad mini. Over time I have found that I use each of them for different purposes. For me, the SP3 can serve as a small desktop, laptop and tablet. I have the docking station and wireless keyboard which I use at home. I take the SP3 with me to meetings and when I travel. In my opinion, it is a more versatile, all around device than the iPad, which I also enjoy but for different reasons. The keyboard cover works fine when needed. I now keep the iPad at home for web browsing and checking emails. The SP3'is a powerful and capable device that has the same capabilities as an iPad plus provides additional functions. One question I would ask is does she really need anything more than an iPad? Another question would be what OS doe she prefer? If I were,to just have one, I would choose the SP3 hands down.

The SP3 and iPad should not really be compared IMO.

They really are two different classes of device.

IPad is mainly a media consumption device, where as the SP3 is a full blown laptop replacement.

Wife just started her maternity leave and will be at home for about four months so I want to get her one of these to keep herself entertained. Can someone with some experience give some feedback on which they like better and some of the reasons why? I know there are some tech savvy folks here, so I'm figuring this is a good place for feedback.

I have both and the Ipad which I bought first collects dust in a desk drawer. These two devices are not in any way comprable. JMHO

I'd honestly tell you to hold off for a few months. It's widely believed that the SP4 will be making its debut right after Windows 10 is released (early fall)? Maybe as late as Christmas but that's not but 5 months away.

I have both (currently trying out a Surface Pro 3 for work) and, like everyone else, find both are useful in their own ways. My simple answer is that the iPad is more for "fun" (watching movies, playing games, etc.) and the Surface Pro 3 is for "work". Not saying that the SP3 can't play games, watch movies, etc. but why spend that kind of coin when you can get a lower priced (iPad Air) for that.

Probably not. We went to Best Buy this weekend and she was looking at them (no clue I'm getting one) and she thought that SP3 was cool, but like I said it is strictly a "just for fun" device. She has work laptop, so she would never do actual work on this device.

I'm leaning SP3 after some of the comments in this thread. No real reason why. Probably dumb since I guess we could share things among all of Apple devices, but we don't do that now anyway.

Which OS does she like more? Personally I love the live tiles and such on the SP2/SP3. I like the Windows 8 OS and assume Windows 10 is going to be similar.

However, if she prefers the Linux/Mac OS, then I'd go iPad. To me, it really boils down to what OS she likes.

If she's staying at home looking for entertainment then a true desktop is by far the best option. Seriously.

I love my Surface 3 for getting work done on client site ... in fact it is fantastic for that purpose. But right now I'm at home typing on my favorite keyboard hooked up to a regular desktop.

If I want mobility, sure, and iPad or Surface will be fine but I'm at home in my pajamas and don't need it.

Thread sidebar -- I used to do this same thing. Then I bought the docking station for my SP3, hooked up my keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc... and haven't booted up my desktop in 6 months. I keep my travel power cord and mouse in my computer bag. Only thing I have to pack when I travel is my USB thumb drive and the SP3.

As for OP -- Go with the iPad Mini. She'll be able to use it much easier while breast feeding/bottle feeding and it fits easier in a diaper bag. In my opinion, the SP3 is a much better device, but is probably not the best product for your intended use. (For reference, I'm the father of 4... been there, done that. iPad Mini is the way to go.)

I have no experience with the SP3 docking station, it's probably a fine way to go if you already have an SP3. But I still think anyone looking for a machine to use at home who doesn't have one yet should look at a desktop.

I'm looking at getting an SP3 at work with a docking station. I am in and out of the office a lot, and have been using an iPad and desktop PC. As we are replacing equipment, we are seeing this as an option to consolidate things. Anyone else gone this route?

I understand that we will soon be looking at the release of the SP4 with Windows 10.
