1. Bill Russell
2. Michael Jordan
3. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
4. Magic Johnson
5. Lebron James
6. Wilt Chamberlain
7. Shaquille O'Neal
8. Tim Duncan
9. Hakeem Olajuwon
10. Larry Bird
11. Julius Erving
12. Oscar Robertson
13. Kobe Bryant
14. Jerry West
15. David Robinson

It's funny how people don't mention Russell in the GOAT conversation because he was "mediocre" offensively. I don't hear anybody take Gretzky out of the GOAT conversation because he didn't worry about checking or playing defense. Nobody says Babe Ruth isn't the GOAT because he was fat and couldn't field his position very well. People never put down Lionel Messi's defensive abilities when they debate his place in history. Bill Russell on defense was similar to those players abilities on offense. He was so good defensively that his impact on the court was greater than everybody else to play the game including Lebron and Jordan. The Celtics constantly changed personnel around Russell over the years yet they continued to win. They had flawed defensive players around him like Cousy and Heinsohn yet they were always #1 in DRTG usually by a wide margin. His record in elimination games was 17-2. His record in Game 7's was 10-0. Nobody was more clutch, nobody was a better leader and nobody was a greater pro basketball player than William Felton Russell.

I'd love to know how many blocks he had. It's a shame they didn't record them back then.

I just think everything he has done, while great, is hard to compare when there were 8 teams in the league.

This is the damned truth. Nice list btw, I'd put wilt/michael/magic as all tied for 4. And lebron may get higher by end of his career but right now maybe 7 or 8.

So I guess you have Bob Cousey top 10?

My list in order of who is take in their prime. Russell had one of the best careers ever but Shaq would have destroyed every record known to man in the era.

1. Jordan
2. Shaq
3. Magic
4. Hakeem
5. Lebron
6. Kareem
7. Russell
8. Bird
9. Duncan
10. Wilt

12. Dr. J
13. Kobe
14. Karl Malone
15. West
