Tomorrowland 2015 = John Carter 2012?

Went to see Tomorrowland this evening with the wife and kids and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Even the missus, who is no science fiction fangirl, liked it a lot.
So, I was trying to figure out why its box office has been soft and RT rating was so low (48% positive) and I got to thinking about John Carter. That movie faltered on release, but gained popularity since.
Can it be that Disney doesn't know how to effectively market a "new" concept sci-fi movie (as opposed to we'll establish franchise [Star Wars])?

Man, I hate to assign political motives to everything but I can't help but wonder if Tomorrowland's portrayal of enivronmentalists as overly defeatist has something to do with the low RT score.
I have noticed low RT scores for movies that don't fit a certain political narrative.

That's certainly possible.
I try to avoid reading to much into implied political messages from movies (facially nonpolitical movies). That said, it is interesting that Bird's two Disney movies (The Incredibles and Tomorrowland) seem to have a decidedly anti-liberal message.

How can Tomorrowland or John Carter be rated low when Spy with the fat chick is over 90%.

I enjoyed John Carter but Tomorrowland doesn't sound like something I would be interested in.

Nailed it on the head.

Watching John Carter on AMC. Damned entertaining movie.

John Carter was a pretty entertaining movie to me, I've watched it a couple times.
Tomorrowland had an interesting look but never explained who the Tomorrowland guys were or how they came to be. The conclusion is "imagination is good." OK, not very overwhelming.

Yeah, Tomorrowland was kind of all over the place. So the Earth is on a precise countdown to end in nuclear war, global warming, drought, flood and famine? Not to mention Clooney was a little creepy in the cranky, old dude having flashbacks with littlle robot girl role.
But if it gets kids to look up tachyons, then cool I guess.

I can't remember what part of the movie it was but the plot jumped without explanation at one point. I rewound it and it still didn't make sense.
So I looked up the writer and...Damon Lindelhoff was the writer. Then it all made sense why it made no fricking sense.

Tomorrowland is a waste of time
3.0-3.1 range out of 10
John Carter is enjoyable.
6.9 range out of 10

Tachyons have become a go to magic particle in scifi.

Loved John Carter.
Own the DVD, watched it multiple times.
Hated Tomorrowland. Boring and depressing.

Brad Bird gets half of the blame.

Well, they were both by the same director.
Here's the deal. John Carter has been a success, just not in the box office.

John Carter is a great movie and the alien princess is a freaking smokeshow.
I will never understand why John Carter didn't work. The story and world around the plot is very interesting as well.

Marketing.
Guardians of the Galaxy was a similar gamble, but had great marketing.
