What is John Calipari implying here, if anything?

Calipari was on the Dan Patrick Show today and things got a little chippy starting at around the 9:00 mark.

But at the 12:10 mark, DP asks Coach Cal if he would have taken the Pelicans coaching job if AD had assured him that he was staying in New Orleans. Calipari first says AD has to do what is best for himself, which of course has nothing to do with the question he was asked. Then he flat out says no. But then Cal goes into this thing about how you can be a good coach, but without the right roster, you can't win. He even mentions that, if you have a bad roster and you're losing in the NBA, and then mid-season you make some trades, and suddenly you start winning, it has nothing to do with your coaching. It's your roster. (Sounds like he's describing the Pels 14-15 season.) But I don't know what that has to do with the question that was asked. Part of me thinks he was ranting because he'd just gone round-and-round with DP for like three minutes, and he was flustered. Another part of me thinks he's saying he didn't take the Pels job because the team isn't good enough. And yet another part of me thinks he's just talking to hear himself talk.

So he's not worth 8 million a year if he said all of that. He should be solely a recruiter.

Probably just making excuses for his NBA coaching career.

Sounds like he was just saying it is the lack of control for a coach in the NBA he hates. Too many variables he cannot control but can as a college demigod.

Demps did indeed interview Calipari but during the process it was made clear he would not take a pay cut and so that was the end of going further in the process. I think Dell did it out of curiosity and would have still gone down the path that lead to Gentry anyway. I would say those comments are most likely based on the fact that he will never get a good NBA offer and he knows his place is in college but he thinks more highly of himself than anyone thinks of him.

Sounds like he agrees with Mark Jackson, Van Gundy, and others.

Supposedly it was Calipari who initiated contact with the Pels, not the other way around.

Cal coming back on DP show right now to clear things up. 106.1 in NOLA

Coach Cal is in the unique position to just about select who will be on his team. Only a few...Duke, maybe Arizona, have close to the same situation.
So, anyway, in the NBA that never will ever happen. That's like saying he won't coach in the NBA unless he gets to select which NBA All Stars will be on his team. And he wants to get paid 8 million a year to coach his All Star team.
He really believes this crap. That's why he will never coach in the NBA unless he comes down on the pay, and then it would be iffy.
What a tool!
