Doesn't matter. A handgun in the hands of a scared person who doesn't shoot a lot isn't much more than a double-ended flash bang grenade.

If you're set on a handgun get a used full sized 4 or 6" revolver in .357 magnum. A smith and Wesson 686+ would be the best option. They give you the horsepower in the simplest platform to operate and hit stuff with.

You should really get a compact shotgun though. Your panicking wife isn't likely to hit a charging rapist in the dark with a handgun.

Best response so far this year. I may steal that for a sig line.

Thread like this are always entertaining -- so far, this one gets a grade of A+

Sounds like the OP will re-think the handgun purchase. I know good used Glocks are out there -- bought a Gen 3 Glock 19 this week off Gunbroker for under $400 that looks like it was never fired. (also saw a Gen 2 Glock 19 sell for $345 last week on Gunbroker).

The OP has already been advised to get a quality firearm and to avoid getting a Judge. So the only additional substantive advice I can offer, if he sticks with his plan to buy a handgun, is to get his wife a lesson from someone qualified to teach her how to shoot it.
