If so, how was your experience and would you do it again? I'm thinking of coaching my son's team next year. Thanks, Jawja

I have and had a blast. Great father son bonding time. It's really fun if you can get assistants that are your friends. You will always have to deal with annoying parents but if you remember it's just about the kids and have fun with them then it's worth it.

I've been doing it for a few years. Started when my boys were in tee ball and now they're 6 and 8. This is actually the only year where they get to play on the same team which is fun and of course easier on me and the wife.

Just remember that you're there to teach them the game of baseball. Winning is important but teaching the fundamentals is more important. That being said, you should try to win every game you play. The kids want to win, they have more fun when they win and they're more willing to learn when they're winning.

Yes, I have. I loved the kids, it's the parents that I hated. Your son isn't that good, that's why he is playing rec ball. Loved the kids, love teaching them the game. Just hated everything else.

I coach my daughters softball team, but I haven't been HC. Always just an assistant (3 seasons spring/fall), because I didn't feel comfortable enough with softball drills vs baseball drills. I played baseball up through HS but had no experience with softball.

Actually, I really like it now. We've been through 8U (coach pitch) and just finished our first season of 10U girls pitch. I really enjoy it. The parents are usually the biggest pains, but it hasn't been a huge problem.

I will say that the parents are worse in 'league' ball compared to tournament or select ball. Most of the league parents think their kids are the next superstars and can be a little tough. Also, they paid their money so they feel a little more entitled, and it's usual a lower end type of crowd (not always, but more susceptible). The more advanced players parents' are usually more grounded because they understand the game and how it's supposed to work.

But I really do love it and plan to sign up as HC for fall.

I coached 3 years rec and 1 year travel. I'm not coaching at all this year. You have to have patience with the kids, but it's the parents that will drive you insane.

I'm enjoying watching my kid play this year and not having to coach him. It was time that we parted ways. There are things that I just can't coach or teach him anymore and frankly he just responds better to the other coaches.

Coaching your own kid is tough at certain ages/levels

Coached my son for 8 years (was manager for all but one season). It was great. Now he is 13 and coached by non-dads. Coaching your own child can be challenging.

Coached the past two years and enjoyed it... We were lucky that a majority of the parents were helpful and not overbearing. Doesn't happen often.

You'll go through life proud and thankful that you had to do this for your kid. And you'll have a new appreciation of volunteer coaches, refs, and umpires.

Yes.

I wouldn't do it again. The next year, I was an umpire and it was even worse.

Where do you find these "volunteer" refs and umpires?

I coached my son and his friends from 6 till 13. It was a great experience for me and I am close to all the kids and parents.

I was very lucky that I had a great set of parents and assistant coaches.

Exact opposite in my experiences

To the OP, do it.....it's invaluable time with your kid. I always laid the expectations down for the parents on day 1. Never really had problems.

I've coached both of my kids form tee ball through Jr. High. I agree with some of the other posters, some parents are morons and many more, psychopaths. The kids are great, some parents think their kid is going pro and they make your life miserable. I've seen just about every one of these psychos have a mental breakdown/major depression when it finally dawns on them that little junior aint going pro in anything but the oilfield! My two are probably two of the best baseball players in Rapides Parish, but I'm smart enough to realize that neither one are "going pro". Grades are all that matter. My suggestion is to do it, but never become one of "them"!

I've coached my kids coach pitch team for two years. I've never lost a game yet. They don't keep score but that's besides the point. It's a fun time. I highly encourage it.

I keep Gamechanger for our U10 Travel team and I had a parent come up to me after a game last weekend and question why I scored his sons hit an error instead of a hit, I told him because the ball went under the 2nd basemans glove between his legs. He was furious and went cry to coach. The coach just laughed in his face. He was so mad.

Then he questioned why I scored my own sons hit a hit and not an error. I told him becaue he beat the throw from 3rd. He didn't understand and was mad the whole weekend.

This guy is insane. He seriously looks at the stats on Gamechanger and thinks college scouts are looking at them too.

The only reason I do GC is so family members that can't make it can follow the game in real time he doesn't get that.
