Best bet is to find something that stickers for about 40k and look at a really nice pre-owned with a few years of warranty left. My commuter car was under 30k, but other than using it for that, there aren't too many cars that really wow me under the 30k price point. Not saying they are horrid and un-drivable, but I'd personally rather drive used.

If you want leather and the nav package, sure. You can get one well equipped for $25k. And if you can find one, a base model will run you $22k. I guess it depends what the OP wants and needs. My wife's has been a great car.
It was between the Edge and an Escape with more stuff and the Edge won hands down.
