who the hell cares if Lebron is GOAT?

Can we stop this madness? I'm the biggest Lebron fan in the world. I have been following him since he was at St. Vincent St Mary's. I have over fifty of his rookie cards stored away in boxes. But before Lebron, I loved MJ. And in between, I've loved other players. Nash's smarts. AI's ferociousness. Kobe's cold-blooded assassin nature. DRose circa 2010 explosiveness. Right now, I love Russel Westbrook's mania and Anthony Davis' ascension. And Steph Curry is the best shooter I've ever seen.
i think Lebron's one of the finest blends of sheer basketball ever. he's a hybrid michael/magic with the defensive prowress of pippen. he sees the court like Bird. he's been the single most fascinating basketball player to watch for over a decade now, and he's built a ridiculous resume. all pros, MVPs, taking overmatched teams to finals. he's been the best player in basketball clearly for 5 years and maybe longer. he left. came back. we have literally watched him fail, win, grow from a high schooler to a young man and father. and now he's taking this injury ridden cleveland team up against a western juggernaut. who knows how many more chances he'll have after this.
but for frick's sake. can we stop framing this argument as whether or not he's the GOAT?! he could retire right now and he'd be top 10 all time. but does everything have to be weighed right now? if he loses the championship to the warriors as an underdog (which Vegas will clearly prove that they are underdogs), does that disqualify him from being GOAT? probably. realistically right now, he would be about future five-six years of total domination from really being in the argument.
but who the hell cares? this story is so much more fun than how he compares to GOAT. it's a prodigal son. the hopes of one of the most woe-begotten sports towns in america. a superstar with a thrown together group of scrappers and an injured young gun. the most tv ready team in america going against america's biggest sports star.
enjoy this finals. lebron's team might get blown the frick out. but some of these arguments are patently ridiculous. we're watching an all time great player go against an all time great team (and burgeoning all time great player/ already all time great shooter). it's old nba model vs the new nba model.
fricking watch it. and stop comparing players that can't be compared.

Wayne Gretzky > Lebron James
And it's not even close.
And it's not even close.

You had me until right about there.

According to the stereotype, a 40-something year old such as myself is supposed to..that is, supposed to defend MJ (like some type of generational vanguard) against anyone dethroning him from his mythologically subjective status as the greatest.
I was not a big fan of the Bulls or MJ for that matter, but thought that there was no one comparable..until now. James might not have as many titles, but his sheer freakish talent might be unrivaled no matter the era. He can play and defend all 5 positions like none before him. I thought that no one could will their team to win like MJ also, but this ATL series was a clear view of James's ability to do so.
His talent doesn't diminish the legacies of DRJ, Magic, Bird, or MJ. I'm glad to have seen the era of those icons as well as James. So I agree with the OP in that it's a useless debate. Besides, I have no desire to get in sports-related contests of urination with young prostates...Oh, and get off my lawn!
One more thing...those who were alive can attest to this..it was quite something in the mid-80's to witness someone who looked like they could fly though.

by almost every metric the warriors are a top 10 team all time. wins, offense rating, defense rating, margin of victory
in fact, Nate Silver has them rated behind the two Bulls teams and a Lakers team as the fourth best regular season of all time. How is it so hard to understand that this GS team has been historically good?

If you want to tout GS as one of the great all-time regular season teams based on stats and such ... fine.
You really think GS is better than the great Laker teams (pick one)? the great Celtics teams? the great Bulls teams? the Bad Boys? the Spurs at their peak?
Those teams had multiple superstars and Hall of Famers.
Besides that ... if the regular season meant anything ... then how in the heck did the Hawks just get swept and embarassed by the friggin' Cavaliers?

Pretty much everybody but you.

you mean like a team with an MVP caliber pg (curry)? A fellow all star back court mate (Thompson)? A defensive player of the candidate who will likely make all star teams from here on out? Former all stars at C (bogut) and SF ( Iggy). Role players who have started on other teams.
I'm not taking them over any dynasty teams because they haven't won anything... yet. But at one point, either had any of the dynasty teams. Sometimes teams have a supernova run- like Moses Malone s Fo Fo Fo. And sometimes you're catching s great team on their way up. The only way to compare them is by how they dominated their competition.

They've played the Pelicans, Grizz, and Rockets.
Not exactly an insurmountable gauntlet.
Think about what you typed regarding GS's roster.
Then ... go back and look at the rosters of any of the teams that I mentioned.

that's silly. look at what this roster MIGHT look like in five years.
you've had the lens of perspective and results to say those rosters were great. would you have said those rosters were historically great BEFORE they won multiple titles? No.

GOAT's don't have 4 NBA final losses on their headstone.

david lee, who is a 20/10 player, rides the bench on this team. think about that depth

team stat. he probably won't win this year, either. you can't hold the fact that his team is inferior against him individually
the mavs finals was bad, but the other finals he's lost were to superior teams. if he loses against this year, it will be another
honest question: if the cavs lose to the obviously superior warriors, then do you honestly hold that against lebron?

david lee is not, he was.
just like shawn marion who rides pine on cleveland's bench.

just further supports he has always played in an inferior conference and the GOAT didn't rise to the level needed to win. Can't be GOAT with 4 nba final losses. Team sport my arse when he gets sucked off if he wins 1.

IS or WAS ?
Vince Carter was a back-up for the Grizzlies.
shite ... Bill Walton was a 6th Man for the Celtics in '86.
