Mad Men question

If my ideal series ("can't wait to watch another one") have been Sopranos, GOT, House of Cards, based on many things but mostly the...gravitas, would Mad Men fit the bill? Seen a few random episodes and seems to, but it's about an advertising agency.

Based on the information provided, I would lean towards you liking it. Matthew Weiner was heavily involved in the last part of The Sopranos. He is a very skilled writer and director. There are some peaks and valleys in the series, but I think if you are a fan of stories that involve the ever changing and complicated human condition (which I will assume based upon the shows you mentioned), then you will have a great time watching it.

Do it.
Give it a full season before you decide to bail or continue. It's not for everyone but it's one of the best shows in TV history IMO. Just a masterpiece of character development and realism.

I can understand how some will find MM slow and boring at first however the show is like fine Wine ....it just gets better. However, it is about characters and there are few "action" scenes as the action is the lives, characteristics and development of the people in the show. Personally the setting, the 60s and 70s, was like a time capsule for me as many of the backdrops are the historical events of that time period.
When it's all said and done.... Don Draper is the MF man!

First attempt I got through 2 episodes, just wasn't feeling it. Sat down 6 months later and watched the entire show in a week. Give it time and you'll enjoy it.

You HAVE to give it time. You'll love it if you like The Sopranos.
In fact, it's a hell of a lot like The Sopranos just without the mob activity. Instead, the "mob activity" is how the advertising world functioned in the 1960s and further, instead of getting to know New Jersey, you get a great look at life in the 1960s in a New York setting.
What you will not get is a lot of "Oh shite! What's going to happen next?!?!" moments like you do in GOT and House of Cards. The Sopranos wasn't really like that either, but I would say Mad Men has fewer plot twists than The Sopranos.
It's a great character-driven show. Sort of like how if I say the names Christopher, Adriana, Paulie, Silvio, Tony, AJ, and Dr. Melfi, you'll feel like I'm reading a list of family members. You'll get a new list with Mad Men.

I watched first 2 episodes twice and hated it. Got bored one weekend and tried it again.
I have watched entire series twice now. Amazing show.
I will say though if you get through Season 1 and still don't like it..bail.

I second this.
If Don's presentation in the first season finale, The Wheel, doesn't really sink its hooks into you then I'd file it in the Not For Me category. It's the perfect example of how the show brings you in without action and without the twist for the sake of the twist. It gets you with really great writing and dialogue.

Favorite show of mine.
I did not like how they split up the last season into two.
But that is my only complaint.

Mad Men is a top 10 if not top 5 TV series all time. If you like excellent writing, character development and acting, you will like Mad Men.

Weiner was adamantly against it too and roasted AMC publicly over it a few times. I don't think anybody liked it.

FWIW, I can see where everyone doesn't like it. When we've had full seasons (and not split like the final season) it does have a tendency to creep in pace in the first half of the season. And if you're not a fan of a period pieces, then I can see the turnoff there too obviously.
I don't fault anybody for not liking it. I was never a big fan of Breaking Bad, but that doesn't mean it's not a Top 10 show or that I can't like other quality shows as a result. But you definitely know by the end of Season 1 if you do.

Betty shooting the birds got me for some reason. I just cracked up at it and was hooked from that moment on. Idk what it is about that scene
