It wasn't done that way for long. When the semis switched back to single elimination there wasn't as much of a need for it. As I understood it part of the reasoning for it was to avoid situations where you may play a team 3 times in a short amount of time if the "If Necessary" game was forced on Saturday.

so... barring LSU completely falling apart here... have the Tigers pretty much wrapped up the #1 overall seed in the NCAAs?

Flip them and you won't have a possible rematch until the championship game.
