Did when I was 21. shite sucked. Went from the right side of my torso around my side to the center of my back. Hurt pretty bad. Worst part was when I tried to sleep it felt like spiders were crawling inside my skin

They gave her pain pills and some kind of anti-viral. Seems to have eased up significantly.

I've had it twice once with a small rash and once in the same spot without the rash.

In my case it started as deep muscle pain several days before the rash appeared. Originally thought "Gee, I must have pulled a muscle in my back".

Getting a diagnosis and the medicine quickly can help control the flare up and shorten the recovery time.

My case wasn't very severe. It can be severe and if you get it near your eyes it can be very serious.

ETA: Rib cage/beltline is pretty common that's where I had it. It sucks.

He started it this evening. Also pain meds, and Benadryl .

Might have just been herpes simplex

I guess it is itchy for him if they gave Benadryl. Usually painful moreso than itchy.

Perhaps. Same site, same sensation, just rode it out that time.

Shingles does not always present with the rash, but it is more common than not.

Shingles usually doesn't recur. Herpes simplex definitely recurs. It used to be thought that shingles didn't recur unless imminosuppressed but we now know it can recur. Just not very common.

Just sharing my experience. My first flare up with rash was diagnosed by a doctor and treated with AV meds.

Second episode years later was self diagnosed but once you have had shingles the sensation isn't forgotten.

Recurrence is not common, but it isn't as rare as once thought:

I did when I was younger. It is fricking terrible. I sincerely feel for anyone who has this. It is about as bad as a skin condition/rash can be.
