1. New York (especially if you haven't been...this is a no brainer)
2. Boston
3. Denver
4. Kansas City (honestly, why waste the money?)

quote:switch the order there. you don't want a car in Boston. Rent the car to drive to NY if you insist on driving.
Fly into Boston, rent a car, stay in Boston for 3-4 nights,

I think Mike's is a tourist trap, super long lines for something you can easily get elsewhere in Little Italy/North End.

Mikes is definitely a tourist trap. There are better pastries on some of the side streets in the North End.
As many have said, if you have the time, I would do Boston and New York.
And to second what others have also said, don't rent a car. Boston is extremely walkable and cabs/ubers are plentiful. Not to mention the drivers here are insane (myself now included). More of a hassle than it's worth. Then take the train to NYC (3 1/2-4 hour ride).
If you end up in Boston and need suggestions on things to do, there have been many threads on the subject that have lots of solid advice in them. Enjoy!
Edit: FWIW, you would also make a great choice in Denver. Been many times and love it there.

With Jet Blue leaving NO for both Boston and NYC, that is a great choice.

Boston is cool for 2 or 3 days but if I were planning a trip I'd definitely be spending more time in NYC as there's so much more to do there. I second the guys who suggested flying into Boston (Logan is incredibly easy and connects straight to the T) and NOT renting a car. The T is very easy and you can take the train to NYC just as easily.

Makes sense, but if you mention those two cities and I try to think of what I'd want to do/see in each city, I can think of more things in Boston.

I have relatives in Kansas City. I honestly can't think of a single reason to visit the place if you don't have family there.
