I'm Learning How to Play The Piano

I've always played sports. I played football for 10 years, baseball for 12, competitive weight lifting, and other sports. I've never played an instrument though. My wife played softball but she also was a band geek and knows all this stuff already. Her grandma gave me an old electronic piano that doesn't have to be tuned. Someone stepped on it at one point so the speaker is caved in but other than that, it still plays. I bought an beginners piano book by Alfred and I'm actually doing pretty good. I'm on the Mexican Hat Dance and I'm learning how to read melodies and count. I'm also learning the symbols for notes and rest. It's been really enjoyable so far but it takes a lot of practice. I'm on day 2 so I'm very fresh. I can play this song though.
Alfreds Mexican Hat Dance
I cant find the sheet music for the song or the lyrics but the Lyrics go..
Play it! Play it! Play the fa - mous hat dance!
Play it! Play it! Play it now for me!
Dance it! Dance it! Dance the fa - mous hat dance!
Dance it! Dance it! It's such fun to See!

If you can play that song you may be the next Billy Joel or Elton John..... Maybe you had better stick to whistling.

I told my wife with a little time and effort I might be able to play one of their songs. I sure as hell can get drunk and sing them, why not get drunk and play them?

and count.
Use a metronome - it makes a big difference. When you're counting yourself, playing solo, it almost never makes a difference. If you ever want to play with others, it makes ALL the difference. Everybody has to be on the same count.

My mom made my siblings and me take lessons when we were younger. I took 4ish years and at that time hated every minute of it. I was more interested in playing sports and riding the golf cart around the neighborhood.
Looking back, I wish I would have taken a few more years

Awesome. I used to teach piano. It does take a lot of work bit is fun. When I was studying piano I had my work schedule arranged where I could practice 6 to 8 hours a day Monday thru Friday and even that was not enough sometimes.
Never ever give up! Have fun.

I actually thought about doing this. I can read music from playing another instrument, and played piano for about a year when I was young.

There's one built in to the piano and I've tried to use it but I'm not comfortable with my notes yet. I'm trying to though. It really helps learn the melody with songs. I've been clapping my hand to my knee and it helps. I'll definitely practice with that though.

That is what happens with 16 hours a day practice, 7 days a week!

Learn Spanish. It'll be a lot more useful

My goal is to get to where I can play songs like amazing grace or other church songs. I know the words and the melody, I just have to catchup on the piano. I then want to be able to play john prine and other country or rock songs.

I've always wanted to learn to play. Do you still teach or can you recommend someone who teaches adults in BR? I have my mother in laws upright piano and my mothers baby grand in storage as no where to put them but if I could bang out a tune I'd find room.

There's enough Spanish speaking people where I work. I have 2 people that can translate if I need.

By the end of this Alfred's book, I should be able to play amazing grace.

Just started myself about 5 months ago. I have watched a few of Elena Nito videos, as she has done the course I am doing Learn and Master Piano as well.
Amazing Grace is actually pretty easy when you get to it, at least it is in the L&MP version. This is the version I just learned - Amazing Grace
