dancing all around it but just can't say metal. Because that wouldn't be a cool label even though that's what it is. Prog metal.

First off, not a huge metal fan. But there are some bands I dig.
1. Cannibal Corpse, Vile
2. Suicidal Tendencies, Lights...Camera...Revolution!
3. Ministry, Mind is a Terrible Thing. . .
4. Deftones, Adrenaline. . .not sure they qualify

I will say TOOL- Anemia with no shame on the metal definition.
Ministry has a lot of Industrial in it, but Id say it is metal. Just not pure metal.
In Flames- Clayman
Isis- Celestial (prog metal?)
many of the heavy hitters already mentioned of course.

I mean, Black Sabbath is considered metal, so yeah, Tool and Ministry are every bit as metal as Sabbath.

You need to stop pretending to know more than you do.
I'm not pretending, Broseph Gordon-Levitt. I am a metal enthusiast and a headbanger through and through.
I am also well-aware of Ministry's musical impact and their reputation during the grindcore and post-thrash scene.
Plus, I am fully aware of every metal subgenre. So you can cut out the argument that just because metal is included in the label for the musical genre then such music automatically can qualify as "pure metal" as you put it.
"Pure metal", heavy metal, would adhere more to the sounds of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Judas Priest. The implementation of electronic tracks, drum machines, New Wave influences, etc., causes industrial metal bands to vastly distance themselves from their metal brethren.
I never said Ministry wasn't a good band, but considering your whole spiel regarding death metal and "pure metal", it seems pretty ridiculous that you would choose to defend that sort of band.

"How the frick?" and "extreme metal"?
Are you implying that "extreme metal" is some conjured up, arbitrary label that I just spouted out? Are you implying that it isn't a categorization of numerous subgenres (e.g. black metal, death metal, grindcore, etc.) which emerged during the post-thrash scene and exaggerates the speed and brutality of thrash by implementing darker or more "extreme" elements such as blast beats, guttural vocals, blasphemous lyrics, grotesque imagery, etc.?

If I listed this topic on the OT, I would expect such bitter, dickless comments from someone, but this is a place where thankfully 95 percent of what we post is usually argued but respected.
I apologize for the initial hostility but I just couldn't get over how anyone would list Helmet among their five most influential metal albums.
quote:
Define what "pure" metal is...You are taking what I said waaaaaaayyyyyyy out of context. It's not a type of metal, idiot.
No shite, Sherlock. My question to you is why did you even use that term? And yes, for many metalheads there is a specific concept of pure metal which relates to the sounds forged by the first wave of bands.
quote:
Helmet is an alternative metal band from New York City formed in 1989. They released Meantime (their ...)...this under their own Youtube video.
Again, I know who Helmet is. They are a hard alternative band if anything. Their metal status is questionable in the manner that early Tool's sound was.

You're missing the point, a-hole. And that's what you are -- an a-hole. I listed the 5 METAL albums (not bands) that inspired me. NOT YOU. Thanks for adding YOUR own bullshite.
It seems we struck a nerve.

1. Number Of The Beast---Iron Maiden
2. Sabotage---Black Sabbath
3. Kill 'Em All---Metallica
4. Strong Arm Of The Law---Saxon
5. Undertow--- Tool
Now that is a variegated list of subgenres. Well done, Sir.

4. Strong Arm Of The Law---Saxon
That band could write some phenomenal riffs but after listening to Wheels of Steel and Strong Arm of the Law last week I was amazed by how poor the production quality was on those two records.

2. Sabotage---Black Sabbath
I finally got around to purchasing this and it might be my second favorite Black Sabbath album behind only Paranoid. "Symptom of the Universe" kicks so much arse.

Since you are going to mention this though, I'd like St Amant Steve to give you the same treatment he just gave me. It's not under his "label" I'd bet. If he thinks Tool is metal and Ministry isn't, he's just trying to argue with me for arguing. I'll but Tool as a type of metal band though...especially Opiate and Undertow Tool.
Sorry, Bro Montana. He didn't use the "pure metal" tag.

Gojira - L'enfant De Sauvage
What did you think of from Mars to Sirius? That very well may be one of my favorite progressive metal albums of all-time. I really wish they would do a tour over here.

Lamb of God - Wrath
You preferred this over any of the first three records (not counting Burn the Priest)?
quote:
Meshuggah - Obzen
They can do no wrong in my opinion.

I was watching a documentary on them recently and some music critic remarked that they had transcended all labels and genres. I am inclined to agree with him.

On YouTube there is a fan-made music video of "Flying Whales" paired with the Pines of Rome animated sequence from Fantasia 2000.
It is both comically entertaining and "epicly" awesome. They just pair so well together.

Black Sabbath
Paranoid
Master of Reality
Vol. 4
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
There were no other metal bands when I first fell in love with the genre. All the other acts of that time are now considered hard rock bands instead of metal even though they played songs that metal bands routinely cover.
