depraved heart murder
“A depraved heart murder is often described as a wanton and willful killing. The term ‘depraved heart’ means something more than conduct amounting to a high or unreasonable risk to human life. The perpetrator must [or reasonably should] realize the risk his behavior has created to the extent that his conduct may be termed willful. Moreover, the conduct must contain an element of viciousness or contemptuous disregard for the value of human life which conduct characterized that behavior as wanton.” The piece adds, “The critical feature of ‘depraved heart’ murder is that the act in question be committed ‘under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life.”

Still have to go to trial, will they have evidence beyond a reasonable doubt. Wait until the riots if they get off or lesser sentences.

What are the odds one of them pleads out to testify against the others?

Once?
I searched and didn't see a single thread that listed the officers charges. Stands to reason it would have been on the first three pages. Not to mention that everyone else posting seems to think this is new as well.
UNLESS you are implying that others are going to start threads after this one. In which case, I don't know what to tell you but your are correct that it may well happen.

Are they saying that extreme, grand theft auto style driving with no regard for safety or human life is what killed the guy? Only the driver is getting hit with the "depraved heart" charges correct?

I didn't listen to the press conference, just read it on here.

Yes. The lone murder charge. Cuffed and shackled but not restrained, then a wild ride to bang him around the inside of the van. Apparently, this is a pretty common practice in some cities.

Three of the five others were charged with manslaughter. Maybe leaving open the possibility that injuries during the arrest contributed to his death. Most of the charges, though, stem from the arrest being deemed unlawful. I haven't been able to figure out which officers, if any, accompanied the van. That might explain why three others were charged with manslaughter.

This could be proven or disproven pretty easily, I'd think, if police transport vehicles contain some sort of black box or tracking technology.

The statement they had from the other prisoner in the van said that the ride was uneventful.
But that guy is now retracting his statements and saying the police used them out of context... AFTER his life was directly threatened by people associated with the protests. Yeah, these people really want justice. Kill anyone who disagrees with how they think it went down.

Probably GPS, but I don't know how reliable that is. Either way, driver accelerates then slams on the brakes, perp goes crashing against the inside of the van. GPS won't explain why the sudden stop. Maybe a dash cam.
I think the driver initially refused to provide a report, essentially pleading the fifth. I don't know if he ever changed his mind.

Jesus, what is the story behind that gif?

I think the guy was just firing off random rounds in the middle of the street, so the officers thought that was the best way to stop him.

I think the rioting is despicable but I think there is something up here and always have.
Once this is over and done with I think they will find the arresting officers pinned Gray down with a knee to the neck and then Gray got a "rough ride" while handcuffed in the back of the van. IE they killed him in the course of only meaning to beat his arse for making them run.
And that my friends is manslaughter.

The outcome is so predictable. The current Baltimore political system and non-guilty verdicts for the white officers are mutually exclusive. The black officers will get a pass. The fix is in.

I'd try to get this trial out of Baltimore. Do it somewhere else.
