While 60 seconds is not fast, I think you're overestimating how easy it would be for some. I would bet less than half of male adults in their 20s could do it.

And by train I mean learn how to correctly run a 400mtr race
Besides learning to run the race there are three physical/psychological inherent traits that may make it nearly impossible for some.

1. Slow-some people are just slow. If their top-end speed is slow (i.e. > 14 seconds 100 meters), then all of endurance in the world won't help much.

2. Endurance-some people are unable to build much endurance. So unless thet good top end speed, they will have difficulty maintamaint.

3. Mental Persistenece- even with they physical capabilities, the mental aspects can cause a person to underperform. So thhan with borderline physical traits to run 60 with but who lack the mental strength, will probably struggle to make it.

I ran a 5:12 mile in HS, I didn't run track but we had to be under 6 minutes for basketball or you ran it every day until you could so I made sure I beat that the first day of tryouts. I am 100% sure I would have been sub 60 then but after I finished college and started working in an office no way and even then I was faster than most.

For the most part I agree with you but imo endurance does not play a huge factor in a 400 meter race, even though the race may take less than a minute, it usually feels like 30 seconds to the runner.

Sub 60 would be very hard for the vast majority of 30+ year olds and most men in their late 20s. I think you're overestimating the abilities and physical condition of our fatass population.

I was a decent CC and longer distance runner in HS (didn't have the right build to be truly good /built more like a wrestler). And I can do right around 60 now at age 34. Only reason I have any idea what my time is currently is due to recently training for a corporate 4x1 mile relay and we were able to get on a track. We had a race for 1 lap and our team who ended up winning the relay were all high 50s/low 60s(all in very good physical condition for late 20s/early - mid 30s.

Also, I don't want to bash a 10 yr old so I won't post the pic on here but if you go to Ocho Cincos page and see the pic of him and his kid after the race it looks like he might be the next Bruce Jenner....

ETA: I had to google and holy shite it's his daughter that ran that fast!!!!!

I agree that it can feel short as it is a relatively short race; however, I disagree that there isn't a major endurance factor. Here is a USTAF article from Clyde Hart (head coach at Baylor; trained Michael Johnson, Jeremy Wariner, etc.) on how to train for the 400 meters, which he calls an "endurance spring." -----> USTAF 400 meter training

The 400 meter dash is an endurance sprint incorporating the speed of the sprinter and the endurance of the half miler

What's crazy is the 800 is becoming run like the 400 in top meets. I always called the 400 the crazy mans race. I don't know what to call the 800.

What... Who told you this? If you're not jogging it absolutely is an endurance race. I guess every runner has their own feeling about how long it takes, but as a former quarter man in college I counted the race in breaths to keep on pace and keep my mind calm.

I haven't actually timed a 400 in over 10 years, but I am confident I could still break 60.

When I ran competitively, my best time was 53 seconds.

I was first alternate on my high schools 4 X 400 relay team.

800M was my event though.

800 M runners always have my respect. That is one thing I cannot do! I remember trying to run it once and my legs gave out halfway around the second lap. Lol. That race is cray.

800 was this way when I was in high school. It was a straight sprint 17 years ago, and I was very good, but not elite by any stretch.

The 4 runners I've seen train at the WC level made me in awe.

Joe Falcon would do 800 intervals and it was scary. He was an assistant at SMS for a couple years.

Now? Hell no. I'd probably throw up just attempting it.

When I was in high school? Yes. I think I usually ran around 55 seconds in track. Not great by any means but I never really cared about my time because you feel like you're dying after.

bullshite. Not many above 35 could. Without practice the last 200 meters will kill most.
