If I can live any other place it would be the Pocono region. Worked there for 2 years really loved the place. To move the kids so far away from the grandparents would be hard to do.

What I'll never understand though, is when people feel like they're "stuck" in louisiana yet do absolutely nothing to change their situation.
Completely agree.
I'd also add that there are much, much worse places in which to be "stuck".

It honestly seems like a waste of time, I know I like it here and I pay 120$ for satellite television to show me what's out in the rest of the world, why bother? Besides are schools are some of the best in the world, and I want my kids to get smart.

Just judging from where most of Ole Miss' alumni are going these days, I'd say no. I'm not going to kid myself into thinking MS isn't a shithole. I'd say maybe only a 1/4 of my friends stayed in MS. High school is a different matter, but from my friends that graduated college, they almost all left.

Dude, we have higher test scores than Mississippi, the Republic of Congo and Borneo nearly every year.

It makes sense. The furthest most people have gone back home was Lafayette. Going to Lafayette was treated like a whole day affair.
Nothing wrong with people wanting to stay where life is simple. That is if you're 50+ years old.

You should have held out longer. The Jesuit grads were about to jump in.

Sorry. Having a bad day.

Well not here in Lafayette. Lately there seems to be an influx of out of state people. Which I wish wasn't the case cause most them suck and don't know how to drive.

Swamp life, outdoor living, and food culture too prevalent for people to leave...
While I love Louisiana, I enjoy living in Texas. The public schools are great, and the jobs are plentiful. If I could move to South Lake Charles I would, but I am only 5 hours away. I also like the fact that I'm not burdened with attending every family function.

IMO, this is due to the strong Cajun tradition of stressing the importance of family combined with many not having the resources to move or liking the outdoor activities too much to leave them behind.
Most of my family lives within a 20 mile circle and it's always been that way. The few of us that have gone on to get a college degree have all moved away, but we really miss the family closeness. We visit whenever we can.
Now I live in Dallas and it's really great here in a lot of ways. I don't want to get into a Louisiana vs Texas, but I would say don't knock Texas unless you have lived in one of the nicer areas for awhile.
Most of my co-workers do not have the close-knit family ties that I do. I describe our family activities and how much the grandparents do with our kids and they are kind of surprised and impressed.
6 hour drive is doable, but makes it hard to justify a weekend trip.
I would move back to Louisiana if there is a job available comparable to my current job. Now that we have little ones, the urge to move back is becoming stronger.

The map does show that people obviously do move to Louisiana. It is just that largely Southerners moving here. Which I won't complain about.

Makes sense to me. Even if you wanted to stay in MS, where are the jobs for college-educated people? I can't think of anywhere besides Jackson, and I don't think there's a huge selection even there outside of healthcare and government.
