So now that their flash in the pan success is over and they aren't even in touching distance of Bayern and are not a threat in Europe anymore what are they going to do?
You need to brush up on some history
Dortmund isn't some new club that just became good

Keep their "effective business model" and wait another decade for the next brief spell of success or start playing with the big boys?
If they really can "buy anyone they want" yet refuse to even as their best players are poached by their main rival then Klopp is an idiot, the club has no ambition, or both. That's how you get to be a mid table after thought.
Lewa left on a free you cant do anything about that.
Gotze was a blunder bc of a clause in the contract

This is a new era, for better or worse, where money ultimately rules. Clubs can't sustain real success trying to do it the way Dortmund, Southampton, or whoever else you want to throw out there are doing it.
What Dortmund did the last 3-4 years or so before this one is amazing and something they should be very proud of but unless they become willing to spend it's going to be a cyclical thing where success comes and goes.
If Dortmund are content to play second fiddle to Bayern and fight for a CL spot every year and get bounced early out of Europe they can probably do that but, as you say, for the second biggest club in Germany they should strive for more.

I'm not saying it's their fault but it goes back to my point that sparked this debate that they can't keep their best players from going to their biggest rival. That's got to be incredibly frustrating for a manager.

Same as above. The reasons are really irrelevant, the fact is they can't sustain success when they can't keep their top talent. Especially if he/they won't spend money to adequately replace it.
