Baez butchered it. Changed "Stone-Man's Cavalry" to "so much Calvary"

And she also sings "There goes the Robert E. Lee", as if referring to this

Robert E. Lee is one of the greatest Americans that ever lived. The definition of a gentleman.

Basically it belonged to Lee
Feds stole it and started burying soldiers there
Years later the Lee family sued and won

Is that right?

Virgil Kane is the name
And I served on the Danville train
'Till Stoneman's cavalry came
And tore up the tracks again. In the winter of '65
We were hungry, just barely alive
By May the 10th, Richmond had fell
It's a time I remember, oh so well.

He really is.

He isn't given enough respect these days. People unfairly equate him to all the negatives associated with the confederacy.

At Appomatox, only one General owned slaves, and it wasn't Robert E. Lee, he freed his prior to the war.

That's a pretty good summation of things. The Union did take it over and later on under the orders of Union Quatermaster Gen. Meigs started burying Union soldiers there during the war. Meigs lost a son during the war and many believe he meant to make Lee suffer personally for his loss. I can't remember the exact quote but I believe he said something along the lines of wanting to bury the Union dead right up to the front door of Arlington house so that Lee would never again be able to use his home.

Lee's wife actually tried to pay the taxes owed on the land through and intermediary but the Feds refused the payment since she did not present it in person in Washington, which would have been impossible during the war anyway. Years later Lee's grandson sued the government and got the property back, the case going all the way to the Supreme Court. Lee then turned around and sold the property back to the Government.

Herman Haupt rebuilt this fired bridge near Fredericksburg, VA in about nine days using mostly all locally-sourced materials.

The Yankees weren't scared of work or particularly stupid.
