2011 would completely humiliate 2007 and 1958. They would merely embarrass 2003.
2011 was the most talented team we probably ever had (I wasn't around for 1958), but no team would embarrass the 2003 team the way they were at the end of the season. That was one of the best defenses I've ever seen and I had complete confidence that they could stop anyone.
We had Marcus Spears, Marquise Hill, Chad Lavalais and Kyle Williams (who is still playing in the NFL and made his 4th Pro Bowl in the last 5 years last season). And that was just the D-line.
We also had LaRon Landry, Corey Webster, Randall Gay, etc., in the secondary too.
Hell, our punter from that team is still in the pros.

2001 is the equivalent of today's east champ. Great they were the first to win a conf title in a long time, but that team wasn't very good.
Wat?

2011 is best by a long shot.
Best players from 2003 and 2007 combined don't beat them.
This may be the dumbest thing I have ever read on this site, and there's been plenty to go around.
2011 was great but was also embarrassed.
2003 IMO is the greatest of all time. That defense was nasty. And they have the hardware so

I just don't get this. The 2011 team is 4th or 5th best in LSU history. Let's face facts. This team could not cross midfield until the 4th quarter vs Bama. Also, this team did not get it's first 1st down until the 3rd quarter vs UGA.

2011 is the greatest of all time

QB play was notrocious at the end of the year. Also, it took a great game by TM7 to come back against Arkansas.

I still think the '06 team from the Tennessee game on was the best team we ever had. There wasn't a team in the country that could touch us at the end of the year.

Well, that and 494 yards of total offense. Funny how we re-remember things.

Those were the exact 5 in that order that came to my mind. At the end of the season the 2001 team was so much fun to watch. Never forget being in Tuscaloosa watching the Rohan and Reed show. Great times.

Agree. That was a great team and their accomplishments of going unbeaten in the SEC, beating the Rose,Orange,Cotton and ironically BCS bowl winner were amazing. But the savage beatdown and just pitiful effort on offense pop the balloon on that one being best ever.
No way. And why would you even want to say your best team ever was beaten in their biggest game 21-0? Someone likened this to the 2007 Patriots who went 18-0 before the Super Bowl loss. Again, tremendous team but does anyone think of that team as one of the best teams or even Patriot teams ever? And that team's offense had a pulse that day.

I find a lot flawed with this article.
quote:
Memorable game: LSU’s season teetered on the brink when it traveled to play Ole Miss in Week 11. The Rebels, ranked No. 15, could have clinched the SEC West with a win. Instead, LSU beat up on quarterback Eli Manning and held off a fourth-quarter rally for a 17-14 win.
I wouldn't have picked this as a memorable game. I would have picked LSU's 17–10 victory over UGA.
Good points, and I agree that the Georgia game was when LSU proved it could go toe to toe with the SEC's best.
The reason the Ole Miss game is memorable, though, is that LSU was in trouble for most of the game and a loss would have clinched the West for the Rebels. Ole Miss was undefeated in the SEC and LSU had lost to Florida. There was only one more game after the Ole Miss game. Pretty important game.

Overall I would rank the 2003 team ahead of the 2011 team. I would say the 2011 defense was slightly better then 2003, But the 2003 team had a much better offense. The 2011 team scored a lot on defensive turnovers and special teams.

2003 team's O-Line was filthy by the end of the year. Great O-Line play by the National Title game against OU.

2011 has to be 1. The talent on that team was impeccable.

I mean, it kind of depends on how you define "best". If we're talking head-to-head, I'd take 2011 over any LSU team ever and wouldn't hesitate to do so. But as far as accomplishments, they'd have to be 4th on account of not winning the natty. I'm almost inclined to put them 3rd following that criteria, ahead of 2007, when you consider the BRUTAL schedule that we coasted through and because our only loss was to the national champion who we already beat on their home field.

Why do people keep repeating this mantra that "2003 had a much better offense"?
2011 scored more points per game while playing better defenses
2011 scored 35 points or more in 11 games, 2003 did it 6 times
2011 scored 40 points or more in 9 games, 2003 did it 5 times
Both laid an absolute egg offensively in a loss- but 2011 did it at a neutral site against an absolutely incredible defense, while 2003 did it at home against an average Florida team.

To all the posters elevating 2003 because of QB play- did we watch the same games?
In our 4 most important games of 2003, Matt Mauck threw 4 TDs against 9 INTs.

Maybe because the 2011 offense failed to pick up a single first down against Georgia until the 3rd quarter. Or the 2011 offense didn't even cross the 50 until the 4th quarter in the freaking National Championship game?
Using points as a determining factor isn't exactly accurate considering the 2011 team scored a lot on defense and special teams and created a ton of turnovers.
The 2003 offense got better as the season progressed, the 2011 offense got worse.

5 teams of all time:
2011
1958
1969
2003
2007
The 1969 team was a tremendous team that lost to the magician archie manning-26-23--they stayed home from bowling because of Notre dame deciding to do away with their bowl restrictions--Cotton Bowl screwed us since they got the Irish, and we decided to stay home. remember, not near as many bowls back then as now. An all-time great team!!
