OT Public Service Announcement - Clean your A/C fins outside
Posted on 4/9/15 at 7:50 am

I cleaned mine a little over 2 weeks ago and my electric bill is already $30 cheaper than last month, and my A/C has run more this month.
It is a simple process, just make sure you turn off the power to the unit.

Clean my a-hole, you say?

The fins are the grill or radiator looking thing around the fan on your outside unit. It is called a fin fan. The fins are the point of heat exchange to cool the freon. The cleaner the fins, the more heat exchange surface.

gotcha, yep I clean that from time to time, just spray it with the hose
is there a more scientific method?

Does spraying it with a hose clean said fins?

I always hose my outside unit down a few times a year...does that do the trick? Or do I need to take things apart?
ETA: nice to know I'm not the only lazy one here

there is a foam you can spray and let sit for 5 minutes and then hose off, it's about $7 a can.
You should hose it from the inside out because the air flow is from outside in, going out the top. So hosing it just from the outside could just jam the trash/dirt into the fans even more.

best to take the top off the condensing unit and spray from the inside out to clean the fins/coil. Just make sure you kill power to the unit first.....

A/C Nazi Police!!!
You don't clean clean the condenser coils, you clean the fins. The coils are inside the fins.
Fin Fan is the combination of the coil fins and the fan.
Remove heat from the freon and cooling the freon is the same thing.
BOOM!!!

I'll give you that one... condenser fins.

Wrong. In the refrigeration cycle, heat is removed from the freon at the condenser... and at the evaporator heat is transferred from inside air to the freon. Refrigerant doesn't "cool"... it removes heat.

The only thing terd ferguson knows about AC systems comes from huffing freon.

No its not. There is no scientific measurement for "cool."
In thermodynamics, the refrigeration cycle is based upon the transfer of heat from a system.

I can't stand people that misquote physics. Its how the world works. If you aren't sure, don't spout bullshite.
