re: What's the going rate for a house sitter?

I'll go ahead and give an actual answer.
I pay a pet sitter $30 a day to come let the dog out 3 times a day. So I would say 40-50 bucks a day depending in what else he'd be doing, which doesn't sound like much.

I could definitely do this

let him use your boat while your gone?
Hell no. If anything happened to my boat I'd flip out. The things in my life that are the most important to me go in this order:
1. My wife
2. My kids
3. My Boat
4. My pets
5. everything else

Oops
Usually just a tip.
Normally the pay is giving the sitter a place to stay. The tip is optional, though probably deserved if your dogs are little assholes.

Oh he'll cut the grass and keep the house clean.
Lester, he's 28.

I did this when I was in college. People payed me a few hundred bucks to watch a couple dogs and to drink their beer. Had people over damn near every night. Really cool family and when he came back he said "I'm glad you drank the beer I bought you". Fun couple weeks.

Offer him something none financial if he doesn't need the money: free fishing trip, plane ticket to a vacation spot, etc.

If he is doing a couple of chores give him a couple hundred bucks and tell him to feel free to cook some things out of the freezer and have access to some of your lesser liquors. That is if you have those things handy, if not throw in some extra cash for him to get food a couple of nights. Depending on how he lives it may end up being like a little vacation for him.

How long is the stretch? Short term Id do like $20 a day or long term something like $100 a week? Just spitballing numbers but unless he's a bum and your house is awesome- theres a solid chance Hed rather just be home, so Id compensate.

Probably be closer to a month. I was thinking between $100 to $150 a week. My place is bigger and nicer than his (he's just a single guy that lives in an apartment) but I understand what you're saying about he'd rather be home. That's why I want to make it worh his while.

I'd give him $1000. Don't be cheap

This makes sense to me. I would give him $100/wk. Not like you're doing him any favors by making him pack clothes and live in your house. $100/wk is enough for him to feel like it's worth it and not enough to feel like you're paying too much.

Why not fly Alexa in ?? She'd do it for free .. It would only cost you a bunch of new sheets once she left ..

Oh damn. Is this joker one of hers?

I wouldn't take more than $500 for the month if it was a nicer place than mine, same commute to work, and there was some food and beer in the house.
$50 for getting a dog for a month, $450 for having to deal with a cat.

Being nicer doesnt mean anything imo. Youre still living away from your own place for a month. Sorry but I have a life also and then I have to mow this frickers lawn and take care of his animals while my house chores pile up an hour away.
A grand is getting off easy. If its just the pets, OP can hire a service to come feed them. And a lawn service to mow.
Asking a friend to do this is kind of shitty

Good thing I'm not asking a friend then, huh?
My wife's cousin caught wind of our little dilemma and offered to help.
