OT Runners: How accurate are pedometers?

Went for a run this afternoon and decided to use the Samsung health app om my phone to gauge time and distance. I have always been told it is exactly one mile around the park I ran at but my app showed it being 1.18 miles. I would think a pedometer is no the most advanced technology and should be fairly accurate.

pedometers vary in accuracy depending on how consistent you are at taking the same size stride.
Now was this an old school pedometer or an accelerometer? The later will I would think be more accurate.
If you really want to know, get yourself a cheap gps watch. They measure distances much more accurately.

I use runkeeper and it's pretty dead on with the distance markers at the park I run at

Not accurate at all. this is why I love the OT. I conducted several time/distance trials using the exact same app on my samsung galaxy s5. At the same time, I used my standard running GPS. Here's what I learned: the S Health app that comes with the phone is not accurate. I kept my phone in my pocket over about 5 walks wearing 5 different pairs of shorts. The baggier the shorts, the further it said I went, as it measures the swing. It's not bad for a general ballpark idea of distance traveled but certainly nowhere near what a GPS will accomplish.
Useful tip: use MapMyRun. It's free on the Google play store. It's a fantasting GPS for your runs/hikes/walks.

I have a garmin vivosmart and it's pretty close.
I ran a mile at the beginning and end of my workout today on the treadmill and it clocked it at 1.1 (I ran 1.05 according to the treadmill) and 1.2 (I ran about 1.12) so they aren't spot in but you're going to be pretty close.
