Good stuff thanks.

“I was looking for a fully versatile hunting dog,” Rob explains, “by which I mean the kind of dog that would adapt to whatever situation it found. Drahthaars are able to hunt fur game as well as birds. If you want them to swim, they can swim; point, they can point.” That versatility extends beyond the swamps and fields, spilling over into the Lamberts’ home lives, even professions.

A good friend has one of those. Very nice dog. Big as hell though! My friend brags that she is the smartest dog he has ever seen but he hasn't taught her anything. Supposedly going to be a blood tracker.

Strict testing requires them to do it all as a breed. Puppy test in the spring (VJP) is basically a natural ability test to measure the pups inherited potential. Pup is scored on tracking, nose, search, pointing, and cooperation.
On the flip side is the HZP which is a fall breed test that my pup will be taking next year. It has all the categories of the VJP, plus desire, search behind duck (following duck scent trail across water), blind retrieve of duck, 300 meter retrieve of game placed by drag track, manner or retrieve (sit and hold to deliver), and obedience.
Lastly is the VGP which is a utility test which is 2 days of 2 dozen scoring areas. Everything in the HZP plus a fox retrieve, 400m blood track, steadiness to wing and shoot, and land deficient.
In order to breed, a puppy MUST pass all of these tests with a certain score. Pretty complex stuff that the VDD GNA uses in order to assure that these dogs are 100% bred to hunt everything.

Congratulations on the pup. I seriously considered the DD, but went with a WPG, which I'm going to pick up next weekend. You may have a NAVDHA chapter near you. It would be a good resource for self training and you get a discount on garmin dog collars with a membership. What books (training methods) have you decided to use?

Im so confused. Isnt that Bourgs dog?
Posted on 4/1/15 at 6:22 pm to lsupride87
WPG is a pointing griffin
GWP is wirehair pointer
Seem the same, but they're actuallly quite different. Both great dogs but I didn't want a long coat and I liked the breed standards for the GWP.

Did some entree training out in St Francisville yesterday evening. Got Fitz on a blind scent track of a dead rabbit which started with him on the original scent and watched him work with the wind to find this joker and he loved the fur and almost wouldn't let it go Also did a blind dead duck retrieve in some tall grass and a hot dog trail. Next we will be starting on a little bit of blood tracking and some live animals once he gets a little bigger.

Great looking pup. I've had labs in the past and was thinking about getting something different for my next pup and have been researching DD/GWP.
Do you have any comments on their temperment, upkeep, barker, etc? I've read they're much more docile and laid back than GSP.
