It was J. Paul Getty III who was kidnapped. His parents were divorced and both his father and grandfather initially thought it was a scam that the kid was involved in. JPG refused to pay a ransom because he said that if he did, all of his grandchildren would be kidnapped. And he was a cheap bastard.

After the kidnappers mailed his ear to a newspaper, the old man paid.

As soon as he died the first thing they did was get rid of the company. The taking of Getty oil is a really good book about it all and the family.
