It was learned that they grandson was in cahoots with the kidnappers. The grandfather wouldn't pay up so the kidnappers kidnapped him "for real".

It was J. Paul Getty III who was kidnapped. His parents were divorced and both his father and grandfather initially thought it was a scam that the kid was involved in. JPG refused to pay a ransom because he said that if he did, all of his grandchildren would be kidnapped. And he was a cheap bastard.
After the kidnappers mailed his ear to a newspaper, the old man paid.

As soon as he died the first thing they did was get rid of the company. The taking of Getty oil is a really good book about it all and the family.
