I like the IDEA of Blakeny coming off the bench as 6th man and give him the reigns when he's in there. Great scorer. That's IF Newman comes.

Blakeney is going to start with Simmons, he's our best guard for next year. Also, clearly him and Simmons have built a very tight chemistry, keep on the floor at the same time. Originally I wanted Quarterman in that starting group with Newman if Newman comes here but the more I think about it the more I like Hornsby with the starting group for:
Victor
Simmons
Hornsby
Blakeney
Newman
Newman and Simmons gives you 2 reliable ball handlers in that group with the 3 point threat of Hornsby. Quarterman coming off the bench with Patterson and Gray gives you 2 ball handlers in that group (yeah, don't want to see Gray really handling the ball as much next year, should be an off guard).

After Last night Im thinking:
PG: Blakeney
SG: Hornsby
SG: Newman
F: Simmons
F: Victor
Bench:
TQ- 6th man
Patterson
Epps
Malone
E Rob
These guys coming in next year are elite talent. They will all start IMO.

I can't stop watching their highlight videos on youtube.
This is the most excited I've ever been about LSU basketball. I wish Mickey would have made a smarter decision about entering the draft but F-it. I can't wait 'til next year.

Mickey made the right call IMO hauling arse.
He knew what we have coming in next year, and knew he would be playing 2nd fiddle to a freshman in Simmons.
Numbers and minutes would have gone WAY down next year.

Not really, he would have started at the 5 and probably played 30-35 minutes a game. We don't have much quality front court depth.

South, I'm replying to you because you're one of the most in the know people here... All these people saying Victor starting for us, I thought he couldn't even play until December? So what do we do for the first 4 weeks of games or so (including the trip to the Legends Classic)

That has not been determined yet. Gonna try to get a waiver (though new rules make that tougher).

that's a tiny backcourt with no true ballhandler. TQ has to start. He'll play the point on offense and defend the other team's 3 on defense.
Newman if we get him will be instant offense off the bench. He is labeled a PG but is really an undersized 2.

Bingo. TQ is your PG not only because of his offense but because of his versatility on defense.
My starting 5:
Quarterman
Hornsby
Blakeny
Simmons
Victor (when eligible) Robinson prior to that. You have to have SOMEONE down there who at least keeps you from getting destroyed inside.
I like Newman a lot. But for as talented as he is, the experience and savvy of TQ and Hornsby is something no Freshman can come in with. Plus, both guys have proven they can put up big numbers in SEC play. It's not a coincidence that UK is MUCH better than last season due to the experience of the Harrison twins and others.
Jones should have a ton of options on offense. His best overall line up might be four guards and Simmons when it's all said and done. However, two of those guards must be TQ and Hornsby. Both can defend and more importantly in that line up, both can rebound well for guards. For as good as he is, I don't think Simmons will be as solid a rebounder as Martin or Mickey

No doubt TQ starts.
Epps will be the darnell lazare vs duke impact stretch 4 off the bench

I can see Simmons, Victor, Blakeney, Newman, TQ. Hornsby will start in the beginning of the season but eventually become the 6th man and do well. Patterson and him off the bench and Epps doing some damage down low. Malone will take up space and go in if foul trouble. Gray needs to just transfer.

It amazes me that people don't remember the lessons of the past. Anyone remember Quarterman and Martin's freshman year? No matter how great most freshmen require at least half the season to get adjusted to college ball.
The main thing is that they are all known for their great offense and are not prepared to play big boy defense. They are also used to being bigger, faster, stronger than other players. In college that all changes, especially when we hit the SEC.
No way Hornsby and Quarterman sit on the bench for freshmen. They will get equal or nearly so starting time and playing time. Gray for all of his faults is still the only true penetrate and kick point guard we have and the quickest player we will have.
If he ever settled down and cut the turnovers and stupid plays out, he would be hard to keep out of the starting lineup.

I agree with a lot of this. Playing defense is the biggest adjustment even great Freshman will have to make. The AAU circuit and even a lot of high schools place very little emphasis on defense. Probably the most underrated part of Quarterman's and Hornsby's games is their ability to defend. Also, defense isn't just your ability to guard a man straight up. It takes a alot of communicating and knowing your rotations. That is very difficult for Freshman to grasp.
People like to talk about how great the Freshman are places like UK and Duke, but they tend to forget that those teams also have experienced players as well. That experience shows up most on the defensive end.

They better plan on scoring 80+ per game, because that line up would be a disaster on defense

Center? Did anyone not see what 4 guards and a small forward did to Kentucky? (Notre Dame) ...!! No centers required any longer.
They lost because they couldn't stop KAT. He dominated the game and was the reason Kentucky won. And UK won and they didn't even play that good, only 2 guys scored in double digits. But ND couldn't stop KAT and that's why they lost.
But I wasn't even saying we need a center to stop UK. I was saying we need a Center to emerge because it would allow Victor to play his natural position, PF, and Simmons would be able to play on the perimeter as the SF which is his natural position. If we don't have a Center, Victor woulld be playing the 5 and Simmons the 4.
Sure at times we would go small and roll with that lineup, but having a Center emerge and give us quality minutes lets us be flexible with the lineup and we would be able to matchup against big and small teams equally as well. Without a Center, we would go small majority of the game and would struggle to go against big teams.
