From “Money” to “Hippo,” LSU’s defense changing under Kevin Steele

LSU is not running the six-defensive back “Mustang” package it did under former coordinator John Chavis, and the Tigers are sometimes running a four-linebacker set called “Hippo,” players say.

And the “Money” position? He’s the outside linebacker in the five-DB nickel package. Riley, Donnie Alexander and Deion Jones are playing the position. The position can be played by a strong or weak-side linebacker – a striking change to the nickel package under Chavis.

Why did the defense change? The defense was very successful and the kids already know the calls and the schemes. Just add a few of your own wrinkles and adapt accordingly.
This just gives the negatigers validation when they said Chavis was running the D and Miles the O, because only a few route combinations changed between coordinators.

Because we have a new DC and we hired him to coordinate HIS defense. Not try and run our former coordinators D

Why
Maybe cause Miles would like to hold the leads he gives the team late in a game? :duno:

Is this a running joke? Hippos are from Africa.

Because the old defense was predictable and revolved around having really good DT. I mean, the last two Bama games, they knew..and we did in the stands... that pressure would come from the blind side and probably a DB. In the fourth quarter, that is exactly what happen in the past two home games.
Plus, the 4-3 has limits with the spread. The Mustang package is a hybrid of 4-3 and 3-4 principles. I am personally not excited about getting away from the 4-3 as it has certain advantages, I think an experiment with new concepts will be good. Our defense has to be able to get off the field on 3rd downs and has to be able to stop a key 4th quarter drive.

What if the Hippo package has Beckwith and Garrett on the field at the same time?

Tell Auburn, Alabama and ND how successful our defense was. (and Arkansas)
