You make a valid point about the allocation of limited space to a single activity. However, it's not like the entire park is being turned into a golf course and my understanding is that the footprint of the new course will actually be smaller than the area dedicated to the old courses. I also think City Park is among the largest city owned parks in the country. But the bottom line is that City Park needs the revenue stream. If I'm not mistaken, New Orleans doesn't spend a dime on the park. It's totally supported through various foundations and the revenue it can generate from activities. I've got to assume that a feasibility study was conducted and the new course is projected to be a money maker.

Here are the numbers I've seen floating around:

$13 million - cost of building new course
$500,000 - annual cost for maintaining the course.

I have a feeling City Putt (the city park putt putt course) is going to end up being more profitable than this new golf course...
