Keep getting calls from people asking me about my Windows OS

They're all foreign and I can barely understand them, but has anyone else gotten calls or anything of the sort?

Scam. They tell you there is a problem with your system.
They try to get access to your computer. I think they want to screw up your system, then ask for payment to fix it.
They've called my step-dad several times.

I get a call from them every few days.

They will get you to allow them remote access, then show you "problems" with your computer, and then ask for $400 to fix it.
When you refuse, they'll lock you out of your computer.
I think we get a computer in the shop from this nonsense about once a day. I love these guys

How long do you keep them going..?

I've wanted to mess with them, but they always call during the day when I'm busy. They called today, but didn't say anything when I answered. I had to google the number to confirm it was the computer scammers.

My wife got one of these calls one day. She knew about these scams, so all she said was "you are a terrible person and you should be ashamed of yourself" and hung up.

How do they lock people out? Is it like the FBI file encryption virus?

They simply change your password..

I think there are several different ones. 1 apparently puts the computer in safe mode and auto opens a huge, full screen "chat help" dialog box. I think another one just changes your user password
I believe the FBI thing is a totally different entity.
The really bad one is the crypto wall. There is no fix for that shite - just nuke and reload. No way to unencrpypt your files.

They used to call me twice a week and I'd just hang up.
Then one day, they called me and said they are with "Windows Support Corporation". I said, "you mean, Microsoft?".
"yes, yes. absolutely."
"Great. I WORK for MS too! What's your corporate phone extension. I'll call you direct. You called my cell line."
It went on for over 30 minutes. Debating how Windows OS works... log files, security, etc. Who is really an MS employee, who isn't. (FTR, neither of us).
Anyway, the guy finally says, "look, I'm just trying to make enough money so I can come to college in the US. I'm scheduled to go to college at University of Southern Florida and need to save money."
I'm like, "dude, what you are doing is illegal in this country. don't come here. someone will end up shooting you for being a crook."
At that, he didn't know what to say.
He called the very next day. He didn't realize it was me again. Until I said, "I'm telling you, someone is going to shoot you when you get to USF."
He says, "ahhh fricksakes! it's you!" We both start laughing and he hung up.
has not called back since.
