he biggest thing that I took from the documentary was that the NFL only cares about making money
No fricking way
I don't believe such an outrageous thing.

The information is now out there
the best argument against the NFL is that "they hid information"....aka, they hid...publicly available studies?

I see the gripe if the argument is that in the past concussions were not dealt with properly.
and again, that's an argument for the NFLPA, not the NFL
if people want to argue that the NFLPA failed to properly advise/protect its members, then that works. to put that on the NFL? that dog don't hunt

it's obvious. I implied that anything the NFL did was to maximize profits. From breast cancer pink ribbons, to kids getting active outdoor commercials, to supporting the troops. NFL is not doing it because they help the cause. They do it because it helps their image and gains public trust which result in greater revenue. That was what I was trying to say.
MY WORLD IS SHATTERED

I'm guessing the argument is more, we put our trust in team medical staffs that improperly advised us. Likely tough to prove it was done intentionally though.

I just don't see why people want to blame the NFL for anything
It's about what they knew and when they knew it.

LULZ. The NFL had data that they hid for years. They had info that goes back when the were testing Ridell helmets in the early 80's.

I can see you didn't watch the doc. NFL response to concussion is that they gave their players a pamphlet about concussion. On it, it states that's concussion has no affect on ones brain if your brain if you treat it right. Please watch the film before you make such statement.

well was this them purposely lying or what they believed to be true at the time?

why didn't the NFLPA bargain for more protections? the data on brain injuries is not secret. it's public. on JSTOR
simple question: is the NFL or NFLPA responsible for negotiating player protections?

go read the lawsuits
they cite public studies to back their claims
their experts cite public studies to back their opinions
this information is NOT secret and within the control of the NFL

The good news for the players and their families, and for people who disagree with your opinion and want those players to recieve additional health benefits and monetary compensation for their brain damage and suffering, is that the NFL has already agreed to a payout to those who want immediate relief, and will probably be forced to pay out much larger damages to those who refused to settle.

this is almost certainly in violation of the CBA the PLAYERS AGREED TO. if they don't like it, they should take it up with their union reps
i want people to live by the agreements they made
if you want to argue players who played in the NFL prior to the CBA, then fine...but that will be long before anybody knew these risks

Hey sfp did you watch the documentary in the OP? I agree with your posts I'm just curious if you saw the documentary's angle.

i've read a lot of the litigation and scholarly articles on the legal issues, but i haven't seen that doc

How did the NFL hide the results of public studies, pray tell? Perhaps these players knew the risks, went out there anyway, and now that they are broken down and out of money they are looking for a quick buck?

Frontline;dr
And of course the NFL is revenue conscious, as any sustainable business should be. It's not a fricking public service.

This was after the NFL had a big meeting about concussion. I believe it was around 2002. The Dr who did research on Mike Webster and Terry Long's brain was not invited to the meeting. This was after the Dr published 2 articles to the top neurological newsletter in America stating the affects of these linemen bashing their heads during years of playing. The non invitation of this Dr at this meeting was after years of the NFL denied his research, asking him to retract it and publicly admitting his research was wrong. The pamphlet was the result of the meeting.
There was another collective bargaining meeting years later where a wife of a former player tried to attend in his place because he couldn't feed/cloth himself. Goddell denied her entrance into the meeting.
It gets real when you see these researchers handle the brains of these players. You can see that each of these brain was a person once.
