The kid has been through a lot to get where he is
LINK
I think JJ has to control him but still let him loose he's thinking too much and not just playing his game

He definitely has talent- but arriving in the SEC he has realized the talent level he plays with and faces is far superior to anything he has every seen. He has to adjust to the speed of the game and the talent he faces.- This is a maturing year for him and next year he should blossom.
I think we threw too many expectations on him. He is not Pete or CJ - those are very rare players at the college level.
I am in Josh's corner- we need his skill

Not really true. He played in the Big XII as a freshman. Obviously this LSU team is more talented than that Texas Tech team and his JUCO team, that's true.
But I think this year has been an adjustment for him in trying to fit into the right role and getting comfortable in it. In JUCO he was THE guy, and had to drop 30+ a night. Not so much now.
Just my $.02

He is also playing out of position. He Is a 2 not a 1.

he plays a little too "loose" IMO

If he can make huge strides with his decision making and ball handling, I'll agree he'll be good next year. But he's not an NBA caliber player by any means right now.

this isn't high school or JUCO...he's no longer the best player on the court.

To the point where I don't know if he is throwing games or has a drug problem.

what high school in lake charles?

Can't shoot well enough to play 2 at this level. His game is dribble drive, that's by far his best asset

He played at Washington Marion high school in Lake Charles. He got in some trouble and transferred to Wheatley in Houston.

Not really buying the story about that arrest. Nice ties to the community there.

Re said "dribble drive". Without any stats at all to back it up, I'd guess he's leading the team in having his shots blocked. Some of those blocks were so obviously going to happen they were almost like a turnover. Can forgive him a lot of athletic mistakes but how in hell could he have not known there was only 6 seconds left on the shot clock against AU? After a timeout? I can see Patterson improving a lot more than Gray at this point in time, but I hope I am wrong, as we will still need depth next yr.

My huge problem with him is that he won't shoot. It's like Xavier freaking Whipple out there. He puts on a a great move and breaks ankles and drives to the basket and then dishes to someone else. Score a little! WVU game worked out fine!
