Another piece of advice for the OP (if he's still in here, which I almost hope he isn't) is to use subtitles when watching the show. Not only does it help understand what the frick they're saying at times, but it also shows a lot of names and places, and seeing them in writing really helps you understand and follow things a lot more clearly. I've found it really helpful, and now I don't watch the show without them.

Even after reading the books and knowing the names or people and places I find this very useful. Especially because I've already forgotten half of what happens in the earlier books.

Yeah, I followed that suggestion from someone here (Blugrass Belle maybe) and used closed captioning for Season 3 on and it made a huge difference in keeping up with who's who and figuring out where the story is going.
