They were selling more albums than Michael Jackson did in his prime, while Cobain was still alive. They were the biggest rock band since the Beatles...

And Hootie and the Blowfish broke a lot of those records but they aren't legendary in my opinion. Album sales are not what it's all about for me. It's about a legacy of not just how did the album sell but what was the content of the album. I always liked Nevermind a lot but have never been a fan of In Utero, though I totally respect Kurt and the guys for not repeating themselves.

Disagree. Other bands were bigger and still are more legendary. Led Zeppelin being the first that comes to mind.
