I've been to Rome for a total of 12 days and those two places/tours were the best.
Also check out dark rome tours at the coliseum. Heard that was a great one two, plus it is when everything else is closed. Good use of time

See the forum
See the ruins, any ruins
See the churches
Visit and get a tour at the Vatican
Drink road beers throughout the day, around 2 euro at any small store for 24 oz of Peroni
Carry a backpack with a water bottle- There are water fountains everywhere that put out a constant stream of clean drinkable water so thats free.
Eat new and unique things
Learn some italian and try to use it when possible to be polite
Be polite, a-hole.
Dont try and drink after 10pm unless you're going to a club or something, its illegal and people get mad if you try to buy after that time.
DO NOT carve you name in old shite and take a selfie

Do not exchange money at the airport or a bank. Use your ATM card to get cash out each day. No fees through chase bank.

Also, download Trip Advisor City Guides APP to your phone. If you get one of those minimal phone/text plans you can use the map and restaurant feature. In Prague and Budapest, I found it to be VERY accurate.
The city guides can be used offline, which makes them extra great.

That's true, but to use the real time city map...kind of like google maps, you have to connect to the cellular network, I believe.
Everything else, you can use offline.

All of this stuff.
Also, check out Trastevere, it's a little neighborhood in southern Rome that has an authentic feel. Really awesome riverside neighborhood, it was my (and my wife's) favorite part of Rome.
Remember to pack comfortable shoes.
Trevi Fountain is a must see, too.

1. Vatican Museums/St. Peter's Basilica to Passeto di Borgo to Castel Sant'Angelo
2. Palatine Museum, Roman Forum, and Coliseum (these are often grouped in guided tours)
4. Pantheon/Santa Maria Sopra Minerva/Piazza Navona/Largo Argentina (where Caesar was assassinated)
5. Campidoglio
That's enough for your first trip.

Highly recommended. I can't tell you how much more I got out of my second Rome trip with these recordings in tow.
Also, Rome has an surprising number of poor quality (by Italian standards) restaurants catering to foreigners. If you find yourself near the Sistine Chapel or Castel Sant'Angelo, I can't recommend the following place enough for reasonably priced, fantastic pasta or pizza. It's definitely a "local" place:
Porta Castello
I also second the Capuchin Crypt. It's a very strange, but memorable, experience.
There are several great places to get gelato in Rome, but Giolitti is worth seeing just for its history. It dates to 1890 and includes whipped cream on top of your gelato. (Supposedly, Pope John Paul II was a big fan.)
Very close to the Pantheon - a must see - is a tremendous coffee/espresso place called Tazza D'Oro. Definitely check it out if you're a coffee fan.
Tazza D'Oro
For a crazy-good cheap lunch near the Spanish Steps, definitely check out Pastaficio, a local pasta shop that only serves lunch - with wine! For 4 euros, I had the best plate of Amatriciana in my life:

Great trip. I have been there several times including last Easter. Go to the Vatican. Spend time admiring the artwork in St. Peter's. If you don't take a tour, you can rent an audioguide. We went all the way to the top of the cupola where there is a panoramic view of the city. The Sistine Chapel is axcessed through the Vatican museums. Spend time at the forum ,coliseum and other ancient sites, many of which are in the same area. Spend time just walking the streets. It is a beautiful city. Go to the squares and fountains. Piazza Navona with Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Pantheon, and Campo di Fiore are within a few blocks of each other. We like to stay in this area. There are many excellent restaurants around there. Not far away is the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. They may be touristy, but hey, you are a tourist. You thanked people for the great ideas right after someone advised you to carve your name into the Coliseum. That was a funny line but it was made because two American girls were criminally charged for doing that yesterday.

Can't believe I forgot that. One of my favorite places.
Some pics I took there:

Undergoing renovations, not even worth visiting.

Pizza Vatican Trevi fountain still under construction. I did the night tour of the coliseum last September super cool way less crowded. I just like to walk the streets and see what's around the next corner.

A couple more things... summer is going to be very hot and more touristy than other times in Rome. Moreover, the cobblestones are murder on the feet (wear very comfortable shoes).
If at all possible, try to figure out the bus system and plan out which busses you'll take. Your feet will thank you.
Also, even if it's hot, some dress slacks and a nice shirt go a long way in Italy. When I was there, I would usually follow local custom and take a nap from 3-6, change into nice clothes, and get to know the locals.

Did our honeymoon in Italy and we did a food tour in Rome. It was one of the most fun things we did over the 10 days.
