I always liked The Tudors (the one from Showtime with Jonathan Rhys Meyers). It does get a little soap opery though. I've heard good things about Vikings but I haven't watched it yet.
Are we just pursuing Netflix or HBOGo too? If you have access to HBO shows, Rome should be top of your list of "period" pieces.

I've got HBO, I watched an episode of Rome and it didn't really grab me, maybe I'll give it another go

Yeah I enjoyed The Tudors and The Borgias.
The mini series Pillars of The Earth is another good one. LINKIts got Ian McShane from Deadwood in it.
