Fire department has a key. The rest use a code. They usually let the local services know when they change it.

So when a new community goes up, whenever they build the gate system and tell the city, does the police deparmtnet just have a master list on file? So like when they dispatch an ambulance do they also say "by the way the code is _____"?

Gotta be this.

Just set aside a code for emergency vehicles that will be on file at dispatch and make sure they're aware of any updates. I'm sure they'd be liable for preventing aid because of a "gate code"
