I caught a belt once or twice growing up, and a hand a couple more times, but this seems excessive to me. I was surprised at all the FB responses to the article where a solid majority thought it was no big deal.

You're retarded if you don't. Hell, you might as well just make the kid take off his shirt and hold on to the tree while you whip him until one lonely but defiant tear drops down his face.
Oscar!
Oscar!

That's what I thought. Was amazed at the amount of people shrugging it off as acceptable punishment.

Anytime you have to beat/whip/spank a child it is child abuse. There is no reason to ever have to do it if you have done a good job as a parent from day 1.

Of course using any object like a whip that leaves noticeable and enduring marks is child abuse.

Yes, using an extension cord is clearly child abuse.

The fact that it was on his back and arms tells me she was doing it out of rage.

Not sure if serious.

A girl I know who is a teacher had a kid that came in with extension cord shaped bruises. She took it to the principal and he told her to mind her own business, that its a part of the culture.

You're right. I should temper that. Child abuse would be using an object like the extension cord, leaving marks, etc. Just spanking a child with a bare hand would not be abuse (as long as it isn't excessive).
But I do believe that if you have to spank you're child, it is because you have failed in one way or another.

Not really. Some kids are just going to be bad no matter what a parent does. I do agree with you to an extent but you're reaching saying all bad kids are the result of poor parenting.

If a kid is really young or the adult fails to show restraint - It's a problem. I believe there are "instructive" ways to go about it.
My parents used a wooden bread board on me... Made me write on it what I did wrong and how many licks I was getting before I got spanked with it. Got one spank first offense, 2 the second time... Never had a 3rd offense for anything ever.
ETA:
Bread board was only used after initial instruction and 2 verbal warnings didn't do the trick. 2nd verbal warning became "I'm getting the pen out" eventually - and that was usually enough to eliminate an issue.
