newt was a bigger deal, but yeah
they killed off everyone that mattered who wasn't ripley...off screen
Sigourney weaver is such a notorious fricking diva, she also helped make alien 3 total bullshite.
god I hate that fricking movie

Read some interesting info on Newt online. Before Aliens she had never acted in a single thing before, and had absolutely zero training in any type of acting. After the movie she never acted in a single thing again, and is now a scool teacher in California. It surprised me a kid that young did such a good job in such a big movie with no type of training.

Ridley's vision is the best. Period. Alien is Ridley's baby.
Neill will make it an interesting movie, but it won't be nearly as fun or scary as Alien, Aliens, or Prometheus (despite the holes in the story).

They killed two of the previous film's main three characters off screen.
Man, this made me love it more. Again, the sheer balls of it. Besides, Newt had to die offscreen or be recast. And frankly, one of the things about both of the final escapes in the finale of each film is that they could've just floated in space for eternity, never get found, and die. That was an open possibility from the explicit text of those movies. So killing them offscreen didn't bother me at all.
In fact, I liked how much it irritated the audience. I mean, they just went for it. No comfort, no nothing. This is just death, death, death. It's about the most nihilistic mainstream movie ever made.
Their death in the opening credits pretty much set the bleak tone for the film. All of these characters are doomed.

I can never decide between the first 2. They're both so different, but both so great
the first had more tension
the second had more plot
The characters were a little stronger in the 2nd, but both pretty good in this regard
The first one leaves more to the imagination (but in a good way)
The second one has a lot more subtext and is a bit more thematic...
tough call, but I think I like aliens the best

Totally the second is basically just like any other 80s action movie but the lead doesn't have a dick.
Edit: it's blomkamp doing this? Is movie will be a liberal circle jerk. Hopefully is more district 9 then elysium

and the first one is a by the books horror movie
they're both just done incredibly well
the characters in the second one all have very clear motivations except mad about you, but like ripley, the audience suspect he's up to no good and not telling the truth
neither is a bad call, I don't even know which one I like better. Both are directed by great directors. I just think the 2nd is a bit better in this one regard

I'm a huge science fiction fan so I really like Elysium
It is so over the top with liberal BS though that it does hinder my enjoyment of it.

I am too but I just couldn't stand that movie. Foster was one of the worst written character I have seen in a movie in a long time. basically was "the man" from 70s black movies. No motivation other than to keep the people down.

I love both but I like alien more
Having said that, 80s action movies is my favorite genre of movies

Well Elysium is all production values
Everything else sucks, but the production values are that strong.

Can you imagine going back to the 80s and telling people how much more practical action movies are compared to the future
1&2 compliment each other well. If not for Cameron going in a completely different genre I don't know that any of us care about giving ripley a fitting end
You just couldn't have alien 2 be another survival horror movie

Like I said I am 80s action movie guy. give me more dredd hollywood

now action is disaster porn and all kinds of unbelievable shite. I watched one of the new die hards when it came out and John Mclain is riding a jet
in the first one, the leap from the building being strapped to a fire hose was like the biggest indulgence
I love 80s action as well, but those god damn expendables movies
yuk

I just don't get the hate for A3. I find it very comparable to the original which is the superior film imo.
Nothing tops the original, but A3 was better than A2. A2 was little more than a war or action movie.

A2 was little more than a war or action movie.
the art design, costumes, sound effects, lighting, sets
(god the sets, also the hive set is the same as the ace chemicals set in batman, they found it untouched and had to tear it down but you can see how they are the same when you watch both scenes closely)
everything about the movie is top notch except for maybe a couple of the marines were over the top archetypal
It's a great movie, and again, I don't know that anyone cares about ripley as much if not for the second one. They definitely shouldn't have left out the scene about her daughter, but still excellent and compliments the original very well

Remember when Arnold jumped from a plane 80 fight in the air and stood right up in Commando?

Can I take a moment here to praise the legacy of one Bill Paxton. He has been killed by an Alien, a Predator, and gotten beat up by a Terminator.

ok
but it's true there is a need for more practical action movies
everything is gunfu or disaster porn or giant robots...
the shootout in the office in die hard "shoot the glass" Maybe I'm wrong, but I never see something so simple in action movies today.
