How would previous greats fair in the game now?

Babe Ruth in the MLB today?
Billy Cannon in ncaa football?
Ali vs mayweather?

Other examples are welcome.

Baseball, boxing, tennis, golf, and those sports I think would transfer ok.

Football and basketball would not.

Ruth would still be good
Cannon would play for a mid major or maybe be a preferred walk-on at a big school at best
Ali would crush Mayweather. Ali was a 6'3" heavyweight. Mayweather is a 5'8" featherweight to light middleweight

Judging by Olympic times/records/feats, most would be pretty middling. Some would stand out. I think Jim Brown would more than hold his own today.

Ali was a heavyweight. He would kill Mayweather.

Mayweather was fast in his heyday. Ali = big and fast. no contest.

Frazier would have killed Mayweather.

Heck, a lot of the all time middleweights would have, too.

bitzy vs truck. clean up the puddle.

Ali would literally be able to insert himself into whichever one of Mayweather's holes he wanted to, but that's mainly because of the size difference.

I think most greats from 50+ years ago would be able to play today, although not at the level of dominance they enjoyed in their time.

Across all fields of endeavor, not just in sports, generally speaking the greats of 20 years ago would not fare particularly well against the greats of today. They'd still be pretty decent, but no longer great. Of course it gets worse the further back you go.

In some cases (NFL field goal kicking) it's really obvious, in others (baseball pitching) less so, but it's still there.

You just mentioned 3 guys; Ali, Cannon & Ruth who could play at the highest level no matter which generation or decade they were in.

1925 edition Babe Ruth is nothing more than a minor league player in 2015 IMO. But that doesn't mean he still isn't one of the greatest players of all time. An athlete's greatness should be measured by how he stacked up against his own generation. But I like thinking about things like this as well.

Cannon would probably be at a Southeastern type school.

You can't compare greatness in terms of eras. With that being said, none of them would even be close to as good as there were today.

Ruth and all of the other old timey baseball players wouldn't stand a chance in today's game. Which is funny how baseball writers out all these modern players up against freaking Honus Wagner.
